2017 has definitely begun on a positive note for skill space in India, promising a vibrant and outcome-driven year ahead! Events like 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, Vibrant Gujarat 2017, National Youth Day on 12th January have seen the launch of new initiatives and projects that are integral to the success of Skill India mission. We also saw the Skill Council for Persons with Disability (SCPwD) organized a seminar for skilling of autistic youth and ASAP Kerala in collaboration with FICCI conducted a workshop on promoting internships and apprenticeships. Here’s updating you with the next edition of skill development news digest 160117.

News from the states

Assam: Government keen on setting up skill development centres in all blocks of Assam to give a boost to youth empowerment through training and employability.

Chhattisgarh: Intex’s branded retail stores Intex Smart World launched a pan-India Skill Training campaign in Raipur. The objective is to train the local youth to join the fast growing organised retail sector.

Delhi: The chief minister inaugurates 10 skill development centres set up by the Delhi government dedicated to homeless people.

  • Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announces Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PKVY) scheme to skill Indian youth seeking jobs abroad. The scheme will train and certify Indians in line with international standard. Read more…
  • Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) issues notification about Indian Skill Development Services with 263 positions in different cadres. Read more…

Goa: National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) has launched skill development courses in aquaculture technology. Under the program, it is proposed to conduct four courses initially with job roles/qualification packs: 1. aquaculture technician, 2. aquatic microbiology assistant, 3. aquaculture worker 4. brackishwater aquaculture farmer.

Karnataka: As a part of Sagarmala Project, Karnataka seeks Rs 8,741 crores for fresh skill development projects. This includes establishment of Marine college under Indian Maritime University, Chennai for providing Navigational education for jobs in merchant vessels.

Kerala: (1) Additional Skill Acquisition Programme and FICCI Kerala Chapter jointly organized “Bridge 2017” – a workshop on promoting students internship and apprenticeship with a view to strengthen partnering for student internship with the industry. Read more… (2) Santhigiri Ashram launches training programme for Ayurveda Panchakarma Therapists train manpower for Ayurveda and Siddha medical systems. This will provide employment opportunities in medical and wellness tourism sector.

Maharashtra: K11 Academy of Fitness Sciences, an NSDC partner based in Mumbai aims to train over 54,000 youths by 2022 to generate employment opportunities for them.

Odisha: (1) Nalco signs an MoU with Utkal University for skill development for collaboration in areas like research and development, baseline and impact assessment survey for CSR projects, industry and institution interactions. (2) In Odisha, Nalco leads the industries by imparting skill to more than 16000 people last year and setting a target of 18000 during 2016-17.

Rajasthan: The Ajmer division of North Western Railway (NWR) signs an MoU with NSDC to set up skill development centre to offer vocational training and learning of practical skills for profitable career choices.

Tamil Nadu: (1) Rise India, an NSDC Partner, launches first batch of driving training at Coimbatore. The centre was e-launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Training will be imparted in batches of a total number of 120 students with training facilities and skill enhancement in light motor vehicle and heavy motor vehicle under PMKVY and CSR. (2) India’s indigenous welding simulator, SkillVeri, raises Rs 8 crore from Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Ankur Capital.

Telangana: Telangana Academy of Skill and Knowledge launches the TASK mobile app for easy and anytime – anywhere access to information on training, skill development, faculty training and employment. Read more…

Tripura: (1) Tripura Chief Minister calls for offering more skill development courses and refresher courses for skilled entrepreneurs after assessing the employment opportunities in the state and beyond. (2) Tripura Tea Development Corporation Ltd (TTDCL) organized a workshop for small tea growers to acquire hands-on technical knowledge with financial support of the Directorate of Skill Development Tripura.

News from the industry sectors

Beauty and Wellness Sector: ‘Globsyn Skills’ as a part of CSR mandate, in association with ‘Beauty and Wellness Sector Skill Council’ conducted an orientation programme in Kolkata for special communities that included transgender, acid victims and sex workers. The objective is to make the participants self-dependent and making them a part of the mainstream society.

Areospace sector: US aircraft maker Boeing Inc today launched a skill development programme in association with the aerospace manufacturing firm Jaivel to train front-line workers in the MSME segment in aerospace industry at the 8th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Summit.

PwD Sector: Skill Council for Persons with Disability (SCPwD) organized an International Seminar on ‘Skill Training for Persons with Autism – Way Forward’.

Power Sector: Tata Power, an integrated power company through its skill development endeavor, TPSDI (Tata Power Skill Development Institute) on National Youth Day, trained more than 11,000 youth across the nation.
