How true! Slow but sure – the skilling ecosystem in India is getting built brick by brick. Every initiative seems to add to the base and the news about SBI Skilling loans is just in time to help many who wish to avail financial help in building their careers through skilling. The other great news this fortnight reinforced the importance of skills in jobs as the Michael Page Report confirms that the Indian youth is more keen and optimistic about skilling as the route for better jobs. Well, the report might represent those in middle and higher levels of skills pyramid but we are sure it applies to the bottom of the pyramid and entry level jobs as well. News from the states

Assam: The Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal met with the Union minister, Rajiv Pratap Rudy and discussed a range of issues concerning skill development and entrepreneurship training in the state. During the discussions, said the Centre would extend 100 per cent support to the Government of Assam’s Skill Development Mission initiatives.

Delhi : 1. Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs and National Skill Development Corporation will come together to set up collaboration on skills and in areas of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Manish Kumar, Managing Director and CEO, NSDC, mentioned the “areas of synergy” and “common grounds” that both the organisations can identify for working together. 2. Better opportunities for Australian education and training providers to work in India are expected as Prime Minister Turnball, Education Minister, Simon Birmingham and a few other higher education, skills delegates and ACPET members reflected via ministerial meetings, conferences, workshops, gala events, launches and visits to skills centres. 3. Chandigarh: NITTR conducted a Skill Summit and Roundtable in collaboration with FICCI. The main objective for conducting this Skill Summit was to bring skill development stakeholders to a common platform to evolve sustainable skill development approach for skilling vast population of India’s youth…. Karnataka: 1. Bosch develops skilling programs to address India’s manufacturing demands. With a combined beneficiary strength of over 11,000 across both programs, Bosch’s skilling initiatives are getting well attuned with the needs of the industry. 2. Government to outsource skill development to private agencies as it is not ready for the task of providing skill development training to five lakh people this year, a promise it made in the recent budget. The problem is a lack of infrastructure, and the government is planning to get private agencies to conduct the training.

Gujarat: The chief Minister, Vijay Rupani inaugurated a Vocational Training Centre built at a cost of 22-crore in collaboration with Atul Private Limited on PPP basis at Ozarpada in Dharampur. Atul Private Limited Managing director Sunil Lalbhai gave details of the Centre under the policy of ‘Make in India’.

Madhya Pradesh :Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan gave approval to ‘Koushalya Yojana’ for women skill development. Short term skill training will be imparted to 2 lakh women, every year under this new scheme. Administrative sanction of 254 crore 78 lakh in the current financial year and 274 crore 34 lakh has been given for the next financial year.

Manipur : The government launches skill development scheme with the aim to empower the youth of the state, a skill development centre under the aegis ‘Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. It was inaugurated by Manipur Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh in Imphal.

Telangana : 1. Speakers at the Indo-Global Education and Skills Summit & Expo-2017 have underlined the need of skill development in all sectors to make India a global super power. The event was organised by the Indus Foundation with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) as the knowledge partner. 2. The Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI), with active local support from the Telangana Academy for Skills and Knowledge (TASK) and in collaboration with Tech Mahindra Saral Rozgar, organized a special job fair in the electronics sector…. News from the industry sectors

Automotive Sector: Hyundai opened up the India Quality Centre [INQC] in Faridabad, Haryana. This is one of the quality centres worldwide after the US, Europe, China and Middle East with an aim to play a bigger role in new product development for domestic and international markets. It is also opening a training centre at the same facility.

Aviation Sector: Pratt & Whitney has announced today the certification of its customer training Centre in Hyderabad by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. This certification allows the company to provide DGCA CAR147-approved training to aircraft engineers and technicians from Pratt & Whitney airline customers in the region.

Health Sector : The total number of allopathic doctors and nurses in the country continues to lag the WHO benchmark of 2.5 doctors per 1000 population, at 2.2 per 1000 people. The 11th and 12th Five Year Plan has recognised a need to address the ever-growing disease burden. Hence, initiatives are being taken to promote skill development and medical staff safety to strengthen healthcare system.

Shipping Sector: The Ministry of Ports and Shipping has conducted a survey across 13 states and union territories to roll out the skill training as part of the Sagarmala programme. As many as 1.3 million people are to be trained across India’s 21 coastal districts in trades such as fishing, logistics, manufacturing, tourism and construction of new ports to harness the country’s 7,517km coastline and set up 142 cargo terminals.
