WorldSkills, the biggest skill competition in the world, is more than just a competition. It’s a catalyst for change, propelling the conversation around skills. Standing as a monumental event in the world of vocational and technical skills, the ‘Olympics of Skills’ captures the attention of global audiences with its celebration of young talent.

As the largest international skills competition, it unites top competitors from around the world to showcase their expertise across a diverse range of fields. But WorldSkills is more than just a showcase; it is a transformative force that highlights the crucial role skills play in driving progress and shaping the future.

Beyond the pursuit of medals, WorldSkills is about redefining the value of skilled professions in today’s rapidly evolving world. By emphasizing innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, the event demonstrates how skills can tackle global challenges, foster economic growth, and promote a more equitable society.

As we delve into the highlights and impacts of WorldSkills 2024, we uncover how this global platform is setting new standards and inspiring the next generation of skilled professionals to lead with excellence and vision.

WorldSkills Lyon 2024: Elevating skills, sustainability, and global collaboration

WorldSkills 2024 has kicked off in Lyon, France, running from 10th to 15th September. It is the world’s largest international skills competition, bringing together 1,400 competitors from nearly 70 countries and regions. The 47th edition of this global event showcases the excellence of young skilled talent, with participants competing across a wide array of skill categories. These competitions emphasize the pivotal role of skills in addressing global challenges, advancing economies, and promoting industrial growth.

The competition serves as a meeting point for leaders from industry, education, and government, all working toward a shared goal: elevating skills to the forefront of the global agenda. This year’s theme focuses on sustainability and youth empowerment, aligning with the broader global objectives of fostering inclusivity, responsibility, and active participation in decision-making processes that impact future generations.

A focus on sustainability and skills for a greener future

The WorldSkills Lyon 2024 Organizing Committee has put a strong emphasis on sustainability. With a clear commitment to reducing waste and minimizing carbon footprints, the event integrates green skills—such as water conservation, biodiversity, and resource respect—into its competition framework. These efforts are in line with the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child, advocating for the involvement of youth in shaping a more sustainable and responsible future.

By incorporating sustainability into various skill categories, the competition recognizes that the future of work lies in balancing technological advancement with environmental stewardship. The skilling community is also encouraged to adopt practices that address global challenges like climate change, resource scarcity, and ecological preservation.

Uniting competitors and experts from around the globe

As the largest skilling competition in the world, WorldSkills 2024 features not only 1,400 competitors but also 1,300 experts who will guide and assess participants across diverse skill categories. These experts play a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of excellence and fairness in the competition, further reinforcing WorldSkills’ status as the “Olympics of Skills.”

Throughout the five days, Euroexpo Lyon will host the event, and the world will witness the exceptional abilities of these young professionals. With over 250,000 attendees expected, WorldSkills 2024 will serve as a powerful reminder of the role that vocational and technical skills play in the global economy.

India at WorldSkills 2024: A strong contender

India has sent an esteemed group of 60 participants, competing in 61 different skill categories, making it a major contender at WorldSkills 2024. Team India is ready to showcase its prowess in 52 skill categories among more than 70 participating nations. The preparation leading up to this event has been rigorous, supported by over 100 industry and academic partners, including major players like Toyota Kirloskar, Maruti, and Lincoln Electric.

The training for India’s competitors has been further enhanced with the involvement of experts from various sectors, such as Festo India in Industry 4.0 and NIFT Delhi in Fashion Technology. This year, the team reflects diversity and inclusion, with women participants competing in traditionally male-dominated fields like welding, plumbing, and heating. This broad talent pool underscores India’s commitment to breaking barriers and promoting gender equality in skilled professions.

India’s participation at WorldSkills is a source of national pride, showcasing the country’s growing expertise in vocational and technical education on the world stage. The Indian government’s focus on skilling through initiatives like “Skill India” aligns perfectly with WorldSkills’ vision of empowering youth to be competitive and future-ready. Skills Village – a hub of innovation and engagement

At the heart of WorldSkills 2024 is the vibrant Skills Village, located at Place Bellecour, one of Lyon’s most iconic squares. This unique setting is designed to engage the public with various skill families through live demonstrations, workshops, and interactive exhibits. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of skills, gaining insight into careers across different sectors.

The Skills Village is divided into eight distinct skill families, such as Arts and Crafts, Ecological Transition, and Communications and Digital, offering a diverse and rich experience for attendees. One of the standout features is the showcase of France’s Best Craftsmen, providing a rare opportunity to witness traditional craftsmanship at its finest.

On September 13th and 14th, the Skills Village will host Company Open Days, inviting visitors to explore career opportunities and speak directly with industry professionals. This initiative offers young people a unique platform to network and seek guidance on potential career paths.

Managed by WorldSkills France in collaboration with the City of Lyon, the Skills Village serves as a testament to the importance of skilled professions. Visitors can also enjoy curated content displayed on a large screen, food stalls, and a range of refreshments, making it a dynamic and engaging experience for people of all ages.

The broader impact of WorldSkills

WorldSkills is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of youth talent and the importance of skill development in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. The event aims to inspire the next generation of skilled professionals while highlighting the integral role that skills play in economic development, sustainability, and social inclusion.

With 1,400 competitors from nearly 70 nations, WorldSkills 2024 serves as a beacon for the future of work and vocational excellence. It brings together the world’s brightest young professionals, united by a shared goal of pushing the boundaries of what is possible through their skills and talents.

A global stage for skilled talent

As the event unfolds, the world is watching not only the incredible performances of the competitors but also the broader impact that skills can have on solving global problems. From addressing economic disparities to creating more sustainable industries, WorldSkills 2024 stands as a powerful reminder of the critical importance of skilled labor in shaping a better, more inclusive world.

India’s participation highlights the country’s growing stature in the global skilling community. With strong industry partnerships, robust training, and a diverse group of participants, India is poised to make a lasting mark on the world stage, furthering its mission to empower youth and drive economic growth through skills.

  • We often talk about innovation, future skills, and employability. But the real foundation for all of this is built much earlier, in our schools.Students from PM SHRI Demonstration Multipurpose School (DMS), Bhopal, have developed a smart multi-sensor safety system that can detect gas leaks, fire, temperature, and humidity, along with real-time alerts. What makes this noteworthy is not just the outcome, but the learning process behind it.This is what happens when students move beyond textbooks and engage in hands-on, application-based learning. They don’t just understand concepts; they apply them to solve real-world problems. It’s a reminder that when students are given the right opportunities, guidance, and environment, their potential can translate into meaningful, practical solutions. As conversations around skill education and future readiness continue to grow, there is a clear need to create more such learning experiences in schools, where curiosity, experimentation, and problem-solving are at the core.Because that is where real learning begins.#skilldevelopment #education #studentinnovation #learningbydoing #educationtransformation #STEMEducation #younginnovators
