Top 4 highlights in skill education in India
- According to research by Quess Corp Limited, India’s electronics industry saw a 154% surge in hiring in March 2024 compared to last year, with telecom leading at 64%, followed by lighting and automotive sectors.
- Lam Research Corp pledges software worth Rs 241 crore to enhance India’s electronics chip industry workforce and partnered with India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to deploy Semiverse Solutions for workforce development.
- Wheebox India Skills Report 2025 unveiled to 500+ Vice Chancellors at AIU’s 98th Annual General Meeting in Hyderabad, highlighting the theme on “Global Skills Mobility-India’s Decade”.
- Dr. B R Ambedkar Open University, with CEMCA, hosted the OU OER fest at its Hyderabad campus, providing Indian Open Universities an opportunity to review their respective institutional-level policies and practices.
- NSDC and ISKCON have partnered to create GEV-inspired ECO villages in Maharashtra. Collaborating with Skill India Centers, the mission is to uplift rural areas in Nandurbar, Jaipur Rural, and near Kanha National Park.
Stakeholder collaboration – Industry, Academia and Government
- The skill training program on millet cultivation was held at Punjab Agricultural University which was attended by eight farmers focusing on growing PAU millet varieties.
- Employers are adopting a gender-neutral approach in hiring and sees an increase in women pursuing apprenticeships even in historically male-dominated sectors.
- NIELIT Kohima held a three-day entrepreneurship and skill development program at NIELIT Dimapur Center, covering diverse topics from digital transformation in traditional sectors to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection.
- To create skilled civil engineers and provide skill-based practical and on-site training, CREDAI Pune Metro has signed an MoU with Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology.
- The government of Andhra Pradesh has partnered with NIRDPR to enhance skill development in the state, aiming to boost DDU-GKY centers through engaging and informative experiences for trainees.
- Meesho has partnered with Odisha Skill Development Authority and World Skill Center, Bhubaneswar through the SWAKALPA program, aiming to benefit 10,000 individuals and promote entrepreneurship in Odisha.
- Lightstorm has partnered with IIT Madras for an “Employment Skilling Initiative” to bridge the skill gap for youth, and job seekers in tier 2 and 3 cities of India.
Skilling and Upskilling in Emerging Technologies
- Galgotias University and TSSC have partnered to launch a Centre of Excellence focused on enhancing skills within the telecom sector in addressing skill gaps and fostering technology-driven expertise among the youth.
- The University of Ladakh, in partnership with the Hydrocarbon Sector Skill Council (HSSC), conducted a two-day Workshop on Energy Transition and Green Hydrogen. The university will also initiate several skill courses in this field.
