Skills and Jobs: Job Roles in Media and Entertainment Industry

Media and Entertainment Industry is one of the top sectors, creating jobs in many roles that require creativity and technology skills. Besides supporting the foreign film industry with support in VFX, 3D Animation etc, today, we have many opportunities in the Indian Entertainment industry. This includes films, television, gaming, mobile apps and so on. This industry also has many job roles for people who want to freelance and work from home. Media & Entertainment Skills Council (MESC) plays an important role in facilitating an ecosystem for skilling, employability and job placements. Recently, the renowned film maker Mr. Subhash Ghai was appointed as the Chairman of this sector.

Media & Entertainment Skills Council (MESC) was setup under the National Skills Development Mission, Government of India under the aegis of National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC) and promoted by FICCI. The key objective of MESC Council is to create a robust and vibrant ecosystem for quality vocational education and skill development in Media & Entertainment Space in the country.

Job Roles: MESC at present, has 52 Qualification Packs  (QPs) which are validated and approved, there are another 18 Qualification Packs which are in under industry validation. Some sample job roles as per QPs:

Following is an indication of few Job Roles, Qualification and Salary in Media and Entertainment sector*:

VFX Editor:  The individual at work Individuals at this job need to create illusionary elements/images/segments for production.

Educational Qualification: Graduate/ Post-Graduate

Minimum Job entry age: 18.                NSQF Level: Level 5.

Payroll: The average basic salary of 15,000(per month) is paid for a VFX editor, based on person’s experience he/she can earn more.

Roto artist: The Individuals at this job need to break content down into individual frames/elements and alter/re-create content in accordance to requirements.

Educational Qualification: Class XII, Graduate

Minimum Job entry age: 18.                NSQF Level: Level 4.

Payroll: The average basic salary of 10,500 (per month) is paid for a Roto artist, based on person’s experience he/she can earn more.

Set Painter: The Individuals in this job need to understand painting requirements, paint a variety of surfaces and produce desired effects.

Educational Qualification: Class X Class XII or above

Minimum Job entry age: 18.                NSQF Level: Level 3.

Payroll: The average basic salary of 15,000 (per month) is paid for a Set Painter, based on person’s experience he/she can earn more.

Animation Director: The Individuals at this job need to support the director and guide efforts of the production team towards achieving the common creative vision.

Educational Qualification: Graduate Post-Graduate in Fine Arts, Film

Minimum Job entry age: 18.                NSQF Level: Level 6.

Payroll: The average basic salary of 35,000 (per month) is paid for a Animation Director, based on person’s experience he/she can earn more.

Camera Operator: The Individuals at this job need to operate the camera during shoots in accordance to instructions provided by the Director of Photography (DoP). They also need to coordinate efforts of the camera crew during shoots.

Educational Qualification: Graduate Post-Graduate Degree in Fine Arts, Film

Minimum Job entry age: 18.                NSQF Level: Level 5.

Payroll: The average basic salary of 25,000 (per month) is paid for a Camera Operator, based on person’s experience he/she can earn more.
