Skill development news from the government

Indian Institute of Skills to come up in Mumbai: To realise the vision for setting up a world class skill training and vocational education institute in India and take skill training and entrepreneurship development to the next level, the Union Government intends to set up the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai.

B.Voc courses based on latest technology skills approved by UGC: The UGC has given its approval to six universities for new courses on Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Bachelor in Vocational (B. Voc) Degree, Digital Marketing Fundamentals, Fundamentals of Patents, Private Banking, Export and Import Documentation etc. These courses are of new age and of high demand in the market. They will help in providing ample job opportunities to the students.

Skill development programs to be expanded in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh: The Central government has planned to enhance the traditional crafts and industries through skill development for creating employment opportunities in the J&K and Ladakh.

Skill Development Ministry invites applications for NCVET: Ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship has initiated the process of setting up a regulator for skilling, inviting applications for the top posts in the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET).

Textile ministry partners with 18 states to skill 4 lakh people under Samarth: The ‘Samarth’ scheme for capacity building and skilling in the textile sector will skill around 4 lakh people across 18 states as part of agreements signed between the centre and state governments.

Government Partners with Tata Trust for Rs 300 crore Skill Development Centre: The skill development ministry announced a partnership with the Tata Trust to build a modern training and skill development centre in Mumbai. The government will provide four acres in National Skill Training Institute at Sion and the Tata Trust will build the infrastructure and run the centre at an investment of Rs 300 crore.

Skill development news from the industry and CSR

Flipkart partners NSDC to train 20,000 delivery executives: Launched in May 2019, more than 4000 have been trained so far. The objective is certify supply chain workforce by training 20, 000 delivery executives across the country in various aspects of product delivery and customer service.

Volkswagen India recognised for its skill development work: Maharashtra government has awarded a certificate of appreciation to Volkswagen India for its skill development initiatives in the state ITI in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The company has been providing sector-specific skills to improve employability

2.1% spent on CSR by Tata Coffee: Tata Coffee Ltd spent 1.92 crores during FY 2018-19 on its CSR activities.The CSR activities included undertaking programmes focussed on education and skill development, healthcare and gender equality, participating in programmes for volunteering and affirmative action.

Learning and development programme for upskilling managers launched by ZEE: Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEE) has launched a new initiative ‘Embark’ for the capability development of its front line managers. Embark will up skill 450 managers across the organisation and will provide more than 25,000 hours of training.

Craft Pavilion at IIJS 2019 reviving traditional art forms of Indian jewellery: Craft Pavilion by Gems and Jewelry Skill Council of India (GJSCI) is trying to revive India’s traditional Jewellery art forms like Thewa, Gajra, Bindri, Tarakasi etc. It has received a tremendous response which also demonstrates these rare skills live.

Connectivity and cloud services for MSMEs launched by Reliance Jio: Reliance Jio announced the launch of its connectivity and cloud infrastructure services, especially for start-ups and micro, small and medium businesses. These services will be free for emerging start-ups, and MSMEs can avail these services starting from Rs 1,500 per month.

Textiles Association says government’s skilling programme is secondary as poor demand dragging down textile MSMEs: The President of The Textiles Association (India) feels skill development is secondary as the textiles industry is going down for the last 1.5-2 years performing well below its capacity. He said there is very poor demand and MSMEs are finding it tough to survive and curtailing their workforce.

APSSDC offers digital marketing skills training : The Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) will offer a training programme in digital marketing skills in Ongole for 60 days.

Jammu and Kashmir

Skill development training completed in Jammu and Kashmir: A grand valedictory ceremony was organised at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, Jammu, for the Armed Forces personnel who successfully completed their skill development training in computer hardware management ‘O’ level.

MoU signed by Dimapur Government College for skill development training: Dimapur Government College and Emporium Skill Training Institute signed MoU for introducing government sponsored skill development training and recruitment opportunities in the aviation, hospitality and international cruise-line sectors for the students of the college.

Punjab

Regional Agriculture Fair to be organised by GADVASU: Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) will be organising the Regional Agriculture Fair (RAF) for the northern region in September. During the fair, state agriculture and veterinary universities and ICAR institutes of North India will put up an exhibition and share their technologies.

Tamil Nadu

Vocational skills training centre set up in Coimbatore: With the aim to train students and youth in various technical skills, a new training centre has been set up in the textile city. By 2020 the new centre targets to train 55,000 underprivileged youth.

Degree course in Industrial Fishing Technology in Tamil Nadu: Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University has established a ‘Paraprofessional Institute of Fishing Technology’ and decided to offer a three-year B. Voc degree programme in Industrial Fishing Technology (IFT), the first of its kind in the country.

Uttar Pradesh

Auto mechanics to be reskilled by mobile skill vans in U.P: Union minister for skill development and entrepreneurship, flagged off Mobile Skill Vans from Varanasi for upskilling and certifying tyre fitters across the state under RPL of PMKVY.

West Bengal
