As climate change and environmental degradation accelerate, the transition to a green economy has become more urgent than ever. On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5th, 2025, it’s a timely reminder that the path to sustainability is not just about reducing emissions or conserving energy, it’s about building a future where economic growth aligns with environmental stewardship and social equity. Globally and in India, this shift requires more than just policy changes and technological innovation. At its core, it demands a skilled workforce equipped with green skills, the knowledge and abilities essential to support sustainable development across diverse industries.

The green economy – A sustainable shift

A green economy promotes human well-being while significantly reducing environmental risks. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), 24 million green jobs could be created by 2030 worldwide if nations invest in sustainable practices. For India, this shift offers a unique opportunity to align climate goals with job creation and economic progress.

What is driving the green economy?

Several fast-evolving sectors are shaping India’s green transition:

  • Renewable Energy: As the world’s 4th largest producer of wind and solar energy, India is witnessing increasing demand for skilled professionals such as solar PV technicians, wind turbine engineers, and grid system operators.
  • Circular Economy: Industries are embracing waste management, recycling, and reuse—creating job roles like waste auditors, circular economy consultants, and plastic recycling technicians.
  • Green Construction: Real estate and infrastructure are pivoting toward energy-efficient designs, generating new employment opportunities in insulation technology, sustainable construction materials, and green building design.
  • Sustainable Agriculture: Organic farming, soil regeneration, and climate-resilient crops are leading to new approaches in agri-skilling.

The role of skills in driving the green economy

Educational and skilling institutions are adapting their offerings to support this transformation:

  • New-Age Training Programs: Courses in solar energy systems, EV maintenance, energy auditing, and green hydrogen are being integrated into ITIs, polytechnics, and universities.
  • Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ): As a sector-specific body under the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), SCGJ is instrumental in developing Qualification Packs (QPs), standards, and capacity building for emerging green job roles.
  • National Credit Framework (NCrF): The framework is helping bridge gaps between general, technical, and vocational education—facilitating smoother transitions for learners pursuing careers in sustainability-linked fields.

Skilling for Sustainability What It Takes to Build a Green Economy

Empowering India’s Future Workforce with Green Skills and Technology

In the face of escalating climate challenges and growing global demand for sustainability, green skills and green technology have emerged as a critical requirement for the future workforce. According to a 2023 BCG report, the global skills gap in the green economy is projected to reach 7 million by 2030, particularly in sectors like solar, wind, and biofuels. Closer to home, India’s renewable energy (RE) sector is estimated to create 1.7 million jobs, yet faces a skill gap of 1.2 million (TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship data). These skills encompass knowledge, abilities, values, and attitudes essential for reducing environmental impact, fostering resource efficiency, and driving sustainable development.

For industries and institutions, investing in green skills is no longer optional but a necessity to stay competitive in a rapidly transforming global economy.

Understanding green skills

Simply put, green skills refer to the competencies required to develop and support a sustainable, resource-efficient society. These include:

  • Environmental literacy: Understanding climate change, biodiversity, and resource conservation.
  • Sustainable innovation: Creating products, services, and processes that minimize environmental harm.
  • Circular economy thinking: Designing solutions to reduce waste and encourage recycling and reuse.

The transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy requires systemic changes that will impact production processes, business models, and workforce dynamics. Read more…
