Other than the World Youth Skills Day Celebrations all over India, last fortnight also saw some good news on the ITI front. While Maharashtra saw an increase 31% in ITI admissions, the government ITI for girls in Nizamabad, Telangana was adjudged the best in south India. Let’s hope all the efforts towards skill and talent development help India improve the human capital ranking. According the WEF Report India’s rank slipped from from 78th to 105th position in three years. Updating you with the next edition of skill development news digest 150716.

  • Andhra Pradesh: APSSDC collaborates with TCS to offer employability skills training to students of Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: 1. The government plans to set up the first Software Training Park to provide skill training for youth to equip them digitally and economically. 2.Hydro Power Corporation (HPDCAPL) inks MoU with PSSC on skill development
  • Assam: Session on skill development held at BRICS Youth Summit; the deliberations centered entrepreneurship, social inclusion, youth voluntarism and youth participation in governance.
  • Delhi: Macmillan Education launches English Language Training in India to improve English language skills
  • Jammu and Kashmir: Army sets up ‘Naujawan Clubs’ to train youth in J&K through vocational training 2.Apparel, Made-ups and Home furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC) to train and certify 1,000 Kashmiri Pandit women in Jammu under PMKVY
  • Karnataka: Skill development center opened in Karnataka University to impart soft skills and help students from rural areas get jobs.
  • Manipur: The state plans to introduce vocational education in 21 schools
  • Maharashtra: 1. SEED InfoTech and Tricentis plan to partner to develop and train 10,000 software professionals. 2. Nagpur University ties up with Wardha based Smart Skill Tech Private Limited for skill-based training to students
  • Meghalaya: Vocational and skill training to be given to jail inmates to become productive and responsible citizens.
  • Orissa: Centum Learning launches Multi-Skill Development Centre under DDU-GKY provide training to nearly 210 rural youth in three months.
  • Punjab: Punjab Skill Development Mission aims to provide trained and skilled work force in retail sector with MBA in Retail Management.
  •  Rajasthan: 1. Government has decided to set up two skill universities to provide training to nearly 1,100 trainees, one each in public and private sector. 2. Cairn India wins BT-CSR Excellence Award for its outstanding CSR initiatives including skill development of youth of Rajasthan and other states.
  • Tamil Nadu: The ICT Academy aims to train 45,000 students and 450 faculty members in an Oracle Academy program that will include educator training, software, support and certification for students from rural areas for real-world careers.
  • Telangana: 1. Though there is an increase of 6% to 9% workforce, 2 lakh engineering graduates lack technical expertise and employability skills to meet the industry demands 2. NTPC-Ramagundam, under its CSR-SD activities organised 3-month training in the area of Electrical Motor Winding and House wiring.
  • Uttarakhand: Uttarakhand Skill Development Mission (USDM) organizes a skill India product exhibition, in which student trainees from a number of government and private Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state competed with each other.
  • Uttar Pradesh: Netherlands-UP government sign agreement for setting up skill development centre for farmers; Netherlands would share expertise in solid waste management, urban development and infrastructure, water management and related areas.
  • West Bengal: The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Tata Strive sign an MOU for skill development and livelihood generation. Tata Strive is the CSR skilling programme of Tata Group and currently skilling in 25 trades.

News from the industry sectors

  • Skill development was one of the key sectors in Tata Power Group’s total spend of Rs. 47.02 crores on CSR in FY16. This was achieved through Tata Power Skill Development Institute and Affirmative Action initiatives to improve the quality of life of the communities.
  • Hydro Power Corporation signs an MOU with PSSC on skill development   considering the shortage of skilled and certified manpower in the power sector.
  • Apparel training and design Sector (ATDC) extends help to the Government of Nigeria in skilling the workforce for domestic as well export needs in the apparel industry under the Cotton Technical Assistance Programme (Cotton TAP) for Africa.
  • New occupational standards being set up for solar skills with the help of MNRE, Skill Council of Green Jobs and NSDC
  • Google to train 2 million Android developers across various universities in collaboration with NSDC
  • NASSCOM collaborates with Autodesk to build global occupational skills and employability standards in Product Design Engineer – Mechanical course

News from the Central government

  • The next phase of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY2) is approved with an outlay of Rs 12000 crore to impart skill training to one crore people over the next four years (2016-2020).
  • The Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship sign an MOU under Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PKVY) to train and certify Indian workforce in line with international standards.
  • A budget of Rs.10,000 crore approved for providing apprenticeship training to over 5 million youngsters in the next four years to create more jobs.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurates ‘India Skills’ competition on July 15, 2016.
  • India, Switzerland to work closely on achieving skill development goals.
