News from the Industry and apprenticeships

IT, healthcare, auto sectors in high demand for skill training: According to the data produced by the MSDE the sectors in which the majority of skill development training took place in 2018-2019 are Information Technology and ITeS, healthcare, automobiles, and construction under fee-based training.

IT industry struggling to fix skill gap in cyber security: Cyber-attacks on companies like Wipro, Infosys and Capgemini have brought out the need of filling the skills gap in the cyber security space in India. As demand continues to outweigh supply there is sharp increase in the pay package of cyber security professionals.

Zomato, Swiggy focus on soft skills training for delivery staff: As the food delivery market grows in India, companies like Swiggy, Zomato and UberEats are aggressively expanding their delivery network and investing a lot more in training their executives in soft skills.

Nippon Paint helps in transforming the lives of the underprivileged : Nippon Paint has partnered with Delhi-based Tamana and Blind Relief Association along with Pragati Wheel School to transform the lives of underprivileged and special needs children.

HAL to recruit 561 Trade Apprentices: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is inviting online applications from eligible candidates for the recruitment of 561 Trade Apprentice posts through its official website-www.hal-india.com before May 15, 2019.

New vocational courses launched by MAKAUT to boost job opportunities: Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (Makaut) has launched several new vocational courses that are designed to expand the career options for the students. These new vocational courses will help the students to choose the right career of their choice and will also open up job opportunities for them.

Pre-clinical drug development course to be conducted at NIN Hyderabad: The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), in association with UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) and Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), is inviting applications from interested academicians for its five-day ‘Train the Educator’ course on ‘Developing and Sustaining India’s Capacity for Pre-Clinical Drug Discovery’.

Modern College students undergo internship under Bachelor of Vocation course: Modern College is one of the first colleges in Nagaland to introduce Bachelor of Vocation (Retail Management & IT). It is a skill based program that incorporates industry requirement into the academic curriculum. This course is helping students develop skills, prepare them for the industry and increase employability after completion of the Degree. Students are undergoing internship at Pantaloons, New Delhi, Max, Guwahati, Big Bazaar, Bambusa, Dimapur, and Powercell, Aurora and Royal Enfield, Kohima.

Skill development news from the States

Andhra Pradesh

Japan-India Institute of Manufacturing inaugurated in AP: The Ambassador of Japan to India inaugurated the “Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing” (JIM), a residential skill training centre, at Sri City in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It will impart training to 30,000 Indian youth in manufacturing soft skills.

Jammu and Kashmir: Skill development initiatives undertaken by the Army in Kashmir:  Vajr Division of Indian Army has undertaken initiatives in the remote areas of North Kashmir for employment generation and self-sustainment to empower the youth and help them earn their livelihood, through skill based projects such as apiculture, pottery making, embroidery work etc.

Karnataka

GSSSIETW Mysore conducts Skill development programme: The Department of Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, GSSSIETW, Mysuru organised a three-day skill development program on “Basics of Process Instrumentation” at Seimens Centre of Excellence, GT&TC, students of EIE from under Instrument Society of India (ISOI) Student Chapter.

Nagaland

Food processing training course launched in Dimapur: A programme for skill development training on food processing was organized by CAN Youth in Darogajan village, Dimapur. It is sponsored by Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).

West Bengal

UN award for Utkarsh Bangla : The West Bengal government’s skill development programme for youth has been awarded at the World Summit on the Information Society, WSIS, a United Nations body for information and communication technologies. 

CSR and other news

13,000 construction workers to be upskilled by CREDAI and PNB Housing Finance: PNB Housing Finance Limited (PNBHFL) signed a Letter of Intent with CREDAI CSR Foundation to train 13,000 construction workers on- site and off-site, across India. They have collaborated with 8 skill institutes, to roll out the program in a few cities across 15 states.

SBI offers education loan for vocational studies : State Bank of India is offering education loans for vocational studies under which Indian students can avail a term loan for pursuing skill development courses in India. The loan covers expenses including tuition/course fee, examination/library/laboratory fee, purchase of books, equipment and instrument and security deposit if any.

Sixth National Aeromodelling Competition winners announced by Boeing and IIT: Boeing and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) announced the winners of the sixth annual Boeing-IIT National Aeromodelling Competition. This year’s competition featured 1,094 students from over 250 institutions across India. 34 finalists from 12 teams were selected to the final round. The competition also saw a 30% increase in the number of girls participating in the zonal rounds.
