India’s skill development landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, with impactful reforms, strategic partnerships, and future-focused initiatives reshaping how the nation prepares its workforce. This week’s NSN Newsbytes underscore a powerful shift toward competency-based learning, technology-driven skilling, and large-scale capacity building across sectors. From global achievements at WorldSkills Asia 2025 to massive investments in ITI modernisation and specialised sport, manufacturing, and logistics ecosystems, India is laying strong foundations for a globally competitive talent pipeline.

State governments are accelerating regional skilling through targeted programmes in emerging technologies, vocational education, livelihood enhancement, and financial literacy, ensuring inclusive opportunities for youth, women, and underserved communities. At the same time, industry leaders and CSR initiatives are deepening their role in workforce development through cutting-edge training, apprenticeships, and sector-specific capability building.

With academia also stepping up through curriculum innovation and experiential learning models, the nation is steadily progressing toward a holistic, future-ready skilling ecosystem. Bharat Dynamics Limited announced 156 ITI apprenticeship vacancies across nine trades, inviting online applications under the Apprenticeship Act for training at its Hyderabad unit.

Government initiatives

National missions and strategic launches in skill development

  • India finished 8th in its debut at WorldSkills Asia 2025, winning one Silver, two Bronze, and three Medallions for Excellence across 21 skill categories.
  • ADB approved an $846 million loan to modernise 650 ITIs and upgrade five NSTIs, strengthening India’s manufacturing and emerging technology workforce.
  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Government of India, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, launched SportEdge Meerut to develop the city into a global sports hub, boosting skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship for 5,000+ artisans.
  • NCVET recognised Adani Skills and Education Foundation as an awarding body, enabling certification for port logistics qualifications nationwide to strengthen industry-aligned skilling.
  • India expanded skilling in the food-processing sector, with FICSI training 2.72 lakh candidates and PMFME, NIFTEM, and MoFPI boosting nationwide capacity-building efforts.

State-led skilling and institutional reforms

  • Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) trained over 60 Assam youth in specialised energy-sector skills through a six-month residential programme, boosting employment in India’s growing natural gas ecosystem.
  • Tripura signed MoUs with IIT Delhi and Tata IIS to train 1,000 youth in AI, IoT, blockchain, 5G, and other emerging technologies.
  • Tripura concluded a three-day training on forestry-based livelihoods, promoting sustainable resource use, value addition, and entrepreneurship for communities across the Northeast.
  • An Assam school launched student-produced brown eggs under its vocational programme, enabling Class 11 learners to earn profits while gaining hands-on livelihood skills.
  • OSEPA directed schools to deploy vocational trainers as Odisha expands vocational education to 1,061 schools, offering 15 trades under Samagra Shiksha and PM-SHRI.
  • IRFC signed an MoA with BIPARD to provide ₹10 crore CSR support for employment-linked skilling of Bihar youth in global industry-demand courses.
  • Kerala’s General Education Department and RBI launched a statewide financial literacy programme to strengthen students’ money management and 21st-century skill development.
  • Punjab launched a major prison reform initiative to provide NCVT-certified vocational training to 2,500 inmates across 24 jails, enhancing rehabilitation and employability.
  • Over 12,000 Bihar teachers completed SCERT’s five-day training to strengthen project-based, experiential, and skill-focused education aligned with NEP 2020.
  • S Chand Publishing emphasised that well-designed textbooks are crucial to implementing NCF 2023’s vision of competency-based, experiential, and future-ready education.

Industry partnerships for a strong skill ecosystem

  • VTCT Skills partnered with Excelsoft Technologies to launch an AI-powered e-testing platform, enhancing scalable, modern assessments for vocational and technical education globally.
  • Tata Electronics and NIELIT Kohima signed an MoU to develop semiconductor ATMP skilling programs, boosting industry-ready talent in Nagaland and the Northeast.
  • Telangana Chamber of Events Industry (TCEI) trained 180 rural women from 32 Telangana districts in event management through a five-day residential programme supported by SERP.
  • SEIL Energy India signed an MoU with NIEPID to establish a ₹4.5 crore Inclusive Sports Academy in Nellore for structured para-sports training.
  • GJEPC held a workshop in Howrah on advanced jewellery manufacturing technologies, covering CAD, casting, electroforming, and AI-driven design for local manufacturers.
  • At Pearson BTEC Connect 2025, discussions stressed the need for stronger industry–academia integration and highlighted problem-solving and curiosity as key skills for preparing youth for the future of work.

CSR initiatives in skilling and education

  • VOC Port’s Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS) celebrated course completions, achieving 100% placement in Welder and CNC batches, strengthening youth employability across multiple industrial sectors.
  • Toyota Kirloskar Motor signed an MoU with the Nagaland government to implement education and healthcare CSR initiatives benefiting over 4.4 lakh people.
  • Samsung certified 550 more Uttar Pradesh students under its Innovation Campus, raising the state’s total to 2,150 and strengthening tech talent development.

  • COL-CEMCA Conducts Three-Day Workshop on Graduate Employability at YCMOU, Nashik, MaharashtraDr. Madhuri Dubey, Founder-Director, NSN, facilitated the workshop as a part of the Commonwealth of Learning - Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CoL-CEMCA) Project on enhancing graduate employability by integrating appropriate skills into the curriculum.The workshop was organized by CoL-CEMCA in collaboration with Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nashik, from 10th to 12th March, 2026, at the YCMOU campus in Nashik, Maharashtra under the guidance of Dr. B. Shadrach, Director, CEMCA and Dr Jane Agbu , Adviser Higher Education, Commonwealth of Learning.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Sanjeev Sonawane, honourable Vice-Chancellor, YCMOU, and coordinated by Dr. Amol Shirfule, Director i/c, Yash Center for Innovation, Incubation and Linkages and Dr. Nagarjun Wadekar, Director, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, YCMOU.As a part of the comprehensive Graduate Employability Project, the workshop brought together academic leaders representing different schools of specialization, course coordinators, and faculty members from YCMOU to strengthen curriculum design with a focus on employability skills and industry relevance.The workshop emphasised the transition from traditional content-driven teaching to outcome-based education using the Results-Based Management (RBM) Framework.
