On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, Team NSN organised a webinar on, “Teaching for Employability in the Age of AI.”
The session explored how educators can help students prepare for a changing world of work by connecting classroom learning with application, employability and human capabilities.
The webinar, facilitated by Dr. Madhuri Dubey, Founder and Director, National Skills Network-NSN, brought together educators from schools, universities and training institutions to discuss how everyday teaching can help students develop the knowledge, application skills and human capabilities needed for an evolving workplace.
Rather than treating employability as a separate set of skills or an additional component of the curriculum, the webinar explored how it can be integrated into everyday learning. As discussed during the session, employability is not limited to preparing students for a particular job; it also involves helping them enter the world of work, contribute effectively, adapt as work changes, learn continuously and navigate unfamiliar situations.

From curriculum content to application
A key focus of the webinar was the shift from simply covering curriculum content to helping students understand relevance, application, purpose and capability.
Participants were encouraged to examine their own subjects and ask:
- Can students see how their learning connects to the real world and world of work?
- Do they get opportunities to use what they learn rather than mainly recall it?
- Are learning activities connected to authentic problems, situations, audiences or decisions?
- What capabilities are students developing through these activities?
- Can students reflect on their learning and transfer it to other academic, professional or real-life situations?
The discussion emphasised that this does not necessarily require a new curriculum. Existing content can be made more applied by redesigning the tasks and activities through which students learn.
How can subjects become more applied?
The webinar illustrated this approach through examples from different disciplines.
A mathematics activity, for instance, could move beyond a conventional calculation and ask students to work with a household budgeting situation. Students would calculate, interpret information, compare options, make decisions and explain their recommendations; developing numeracy, problem-solving, decision-making, communication and practical judgement in the process.
An engineering activity involving 3D printing could similarly be placed in the context of a small business that needs a lightweight and affordable replacement component. Students could design the component, consider material and manufacturing constraints, test a prototype and recommend improvements. Such a task creates opportunities to develop problem-solving, creativity, decision-making, design thinking, collaboration, communication and adaptability.
The examples demonstrated an important principle: the textbook and syllabus do not necessarily have to change; the learning experience can change.

Developing human capabilities in the age of AI
The second major focus was the changing role of human capabilities as AI becomes part of everyday work.
AI tools can increasingly perform tasks such as summarising, explaining, translating, generating ideas, drafting and producing text. This makes it even more important for educators to create opportunities for students to develop capabilities such as critical thinking, curiosity, creativity, adaptability, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, judgement and learning agility.
The webinar also highlighted the importance of student agency, ownership and responsibility—including the ability to question, evaluate, interpret and make decisions rather than simply use AI to generate and reproduce answers.
Rethinking assignments and assessment
These changes also have implications for assignments and assessment.
The discussion highlighted the need to redesign learning activities so that students are required to think, act, make decisions and produce evidence of their learning, rather than simply reproduce information. Projects, practical activities and authentic tasks can provide opportunities to assess how students apply knowledge and demonstrate capabilities.
The webinar presented this as a gradual process. Educators do not have to transform the entire education system at once. Small changes in activities, assignments, contexts and teaching methods can begin to make learning more applied and relevant.

A continuing conversation on teaching and employability
The webinar concluded with an invitation for educators to continue engaging with NSN on these questions. A follow-up session is also being planned to explore the themes further.
The broader message from the session was simple: every subject has the potential to contribute to employability when students are given opportunities to use knowledge, work with real contexts and develop capabilities that can transfer beyond the classroom.
