Top highlights in skill education in India

AISECT and SGSU lead the way in work-integrated learning through Kaushal Charcha on WYSD 2024

Innovation, inspiration and igniting young minds through skills for emerging career options – this is how AISECT and Scope Global Skills University (SGSU) have re-dedicated their efforts to skill education on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) 2024.

Continuing the tradition of hosting ‘Kaushal Charcha’, a platform to explore and engage with key stakeholders in the skilling ecosystem, this edition focused on ‘Youth Skills for Peace and Development’, international theme for WYSD 2024. Thus setting new benchmarks for work-integrated learning models and work-integrated learning programs (WILP).

RFP opportunities from NSDC

NSDC has invited Request for Proposal (RFP) for Empanelment of Sending Organization (SOs) in India for Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program (TITP). The last date to submit the proposal is 31st Marcy 2025. Invitation of applications from eligible Higher Educational Institutions for recognition to offer programs under Open and Distance Learning mode and/or Online mode for the academic year 2024-25.   • The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has launched a revised Model Skill Loan Scheme. This new initiative aims to break financial barriers for students seeking advanced skill courses, ensuring access to high-quality education without financial constraints. Read more…
  • Dr. Neena Pahuja of NCVET delivered a key session on “Safeguarding the Metaverse: Dealing with Expected and Unexpected Cyber Risks” at the 3rd Cyber Security Conference by GCTC, highlighting cybersecurity challenges and strategies in the Metaverse.

Stakeholder collaboration – Industry, Academia and Government

  • The Indian Institute of Cosmetology, Aesthetics, and Nutrition (I2CAN) has launched a new centre in Hyderabad, offering courses including PGDCC, ADCT, and certifications in Microblading and Aesthetic Gynaecology.
  • Apparel Made-Ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council had launched an eLearning courses on Apparel Sustainability in partnership with bluesign to equip students and industry professionals with skills and meet industry needs.
  • Aimed at making ITI’s in Madhya Pradesh financially sustainable products made by students would be put on sale on campus across all ITIs.
  • The government of Madhya Pradesh will prioritize new industries in textiles, defense, pharmaceuticals, and tourism, including an ultra-modern skill development center for women in the textile sector.
  • The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) and Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC) held a meeting to enhance collaboration and growth in Kashmir’s gem and jewellery sector, highlighting the region’s Blue Sapphire and boosting local jeweller participation.
  • Diageo India partnered with TSL Foundation to train 200 women under the ‘Learning for Life’, a two-month training program which will include theory classes, on the job training and simulations in front office set up and more.
  • UNICEF’s survey finds that 62.42% of female students from low-income families prefer professional careers, while 56.25% of those interested in vocational paths are also female, despite boys having better access to career information.
  • The Economic Survey 2023-24 stresses the need for ongoing skilling initiatives, industry-led skill creation, and linking skills with incentives to address the need for 78.51 lakh new non-farm jobs annually.
  • IGNOU has launched a Bachelor of Arts in Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (BAMSME) program via Open and Distance Learning to support budding entrepreneurs with skills for managing new ventures.
  • The Logistics Sector Skill Council, in association with Steinbeis University, introduces a unique 2-year Master’s program combining a year of project work in India with a year of study in Germany, leveraging SGIT’s Project Competency methodology to enhance industry integration and cut costs by over 50%.

Skilling and Upskilling in Emerging Technologies

  • IIT Delhi announces a first-of-its-kind Certificate Programme in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) Design to meet the growing demand for expertise in vehicle electrification, as the industry aims to electrify 30% of new vehicle sales by 2030.

  • COL-CEMCA Conducts Three-Day Workshop on Graduate Employability at YCMOU, Nashik, MaharashtraDr. Madhuri Dubey, Founder-Director, NSN, facilitated the workshop as a part of the Commonwealth of Learning - Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CoL-CEMCA) Project on enhancing graduate employability by integrating appropriate skills into the curriculum.The workshop was organized by CoL-CEMCA in collaboration with Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nashik, from 10th to 12th March, 2026, at the YCMOU campus in Nashik, Maharashtra under the guidance of Dr. B. Shadrach, Director, CEMCA and Dr Jane Agbu , Adviser Higher Education, Commonwealth of Learning.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Sanjeev Sonawane, honourable Vice-Chancellor, YCMOU, and coordinated by Dr. Amol Shirfule, Director i/c, Yash Center for Innovation, Incubation and Linkages and Dr. Nagarjun Wadekar, Director, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, YCMOU.As a part of the comprehensive Graduate Employability Project, the workshop brought together academic leaders representing different schools of specialization, course coordinators, and faculty members from YCMOU to strengthen curriculum design with a focus on employability skills and industry relevance.The workshop emphasised the transition from traditional content-driven teaching to outcome-based education using the Results-Based Management (RBM) Framework.
