Sustainable Industry-Academia Partnerships for Skill Education in India – Episode 2
As part of a mini-series from NSN, leaders from prominent Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) were invited to discuss the pivotal role of sustainable industry-academia partnerships in shaping India’s skill education landscape. This discussion aims to strengthen awareness about the opportunities presented by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The series is geared towards initiating innovative collaborations between academia and the industry.
The conversation, moderated by Dr. Madhuri Dubey, Founder and Director, NSN, featured insights from Dr. Abhilasha Gaur, CEO of the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI); Mr. Arindam Lahiri, CEO of the Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC); and Mr. Ravikanth Yamarthy, CEO of the Logistics Sector Skill Council (LSSC).
In the second episode, the discussion focused on the imperative of integrating industry requirements into educational curricula under NEP 2020, focusing on the critical technology-driven changes in the industry, creation of new jobs, and more.

Updates from the MSDE, NSDC, NCVET, UGC
- Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE, addressed a JSS zonal conference at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, highlighting the importance of skill development for socio-economically backward groups and inaugurating an exhibition of JSS-made products.
- THSC discussed with MSDE the importance of skill development in creating employment opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sectors and the role of skill development in generating employment for youth.
- NCVET and SCVT, Uttar Pradesh signed an agreement, granting NCVET recognition as a Dual Awarding Body (AB) to SCVT, enabling certification of learners trained directly by the Awarding Body in its campuses or training centers.
- The Ministry of Education is refining NCERT guidelines on bagless days in schools to enhance experiential and stress-free learning.
- NSDC and VTU signed an MoU to integrate cutting-edge skill programs into higher education, aiming to bridge the academia-industry gap and enhance skill development across engineering colleges.
- NCVET signed an agreement with Microsoft India recognizing it as an Awarding Body for vocational education and training.

Stakeholder collaboration – Industry, Academia and Government
- The government of Andhra Pradesh to start skill census in the state to expand the PPP intro public, private, people’s partnership to generate better results for citizens.
- The Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education has introduced the ‘K Scheme’ under NEP 2020, enabling dropouts to complete their engineering education after completing a bridge course.
- The Jammu and Kashmir Government, guided by Vishwakarma University Haryana, is considering establishing a skill university.
- The NFDB, in collaboration with local organizations, conducted a three-day skill development program on “Fish Preservation & Value Addition” from July 2-4 in Wokha, with 25 young entrepreneurs participating.
- Shivaji University Kolhapur has introduced a new B.Com degree course in Banking, Finance Services, and Insurance (BFSI), which includes a mandatory one-year apprenticeship.
- The Telangana government plans to establish a Skill Development University to enhance youth employment opportunities, following recommendations from industrialists.
- ITI centers in Indore have signed an MoU with three industries in Pithampur to start new courses in green energy, including solar technician and electric vehicle mechanic, to meet the rising workforce demand in the sector.
- Mahindra Tractors inaugurated the VEDIC-Mahindra Skill Development Centre in Nagpur, focusing on skill training for rural youth and women.
- Marriott India partners with Honda India Foundation’s Project Buniyaad to integrate Skill India initiatives and promote women’s empowerment nationwide, focusing on skill development and environmental stewardship in northeastern India and Jammu & Kashmir.
- A horse sculpture from ITI Berhampur will be showcased at a digital photographic exhibition hosted by the Indian Institute of Welding in Greece.
- Runway India, in collaboration with Shishoi Oshom-ETF Cell and Wokha District Administration, completed a skill training program on Banana Fibre Extraction and Product Development across three locations in Wokha.
- Adani Foundation has launched a skill development center in Thirumalainagar, Tamil Nadu, to empower women from fishing communities by providing them with skills to become entrepreneurs.
- The Government of Goa aims to create two lakh hospitality jobs in the next five years, as announced by CM Shri Pramod Sawant during the World Youth Skill Day event in North Goa.
- AISECT Group, with support from IndusInd Bank’s CSR initiative and NSDC, launched ‘Skills on Wheels’ to provide skill training in Maharashtra’s aspirational districts.

- AIRA Chairman Kisshhan announced plans to establish a Robotics University in Andhra Pradesh during a tech talk at GITAM Deemed to be University.
- Assam Don Bosco University concluded a three-day workshop, “Swabalamban: Empowering Employment through Solar Energy,” in Assamese, aimed at enhancing youth employability in solar energy and electrical house wiring.
