In the ever-evolving work landscape, the gig economy has emerged as a transformative force, reshaping the traditional notion of employment. With a surge in independent workers, freelancers, and contract professionals, the gig economy offers a talent pool that spans the globe. This paradigm shift brings opportunities and challenges, demanding individuals to equip themselves with the right skills and mindset to thrive in this dynamic realm of temporary, on-demand work.

In this article, we explore the essence of the gig economy and the vital factors that contribute to success in this new era of work. From upskilling and responsibility to financial planning and maintaining consistent quality, we delve into the essential components that prepare individuals for the gig economy. Moreover, we shed light on its impact on workforce flexibility, inclusivity, and security, providing insights into its potential to empower the informal sector and drive a secure future for millions.

Are you prepared for the Gig Economy with right skills?

The future of work is changing and moving towards a boundaryless talent from across the globe. The kind of jobs that are coming up are different from the ones we had and we have to prepare ourselves for the gig economy. So, what is the Gig economy? The Gig economy is a market with gig workers who are independent workers, freelancers, contract workers, etc. Unlike permanent jobs, the jobs in the gig economy are temporary and subject to providing services on-demand.

To do the jobs in the Gig economy, you need to have the right skills, knowledge, and attitude to do such jobs. There are many challenges to be tackled to prepare ourselves for the gig economy. Some of them are –

  1. Skilling and upskilling – These are a new type of jobs and you need to keep yourself updated and keep learning continuously
  2. Responsibility and planning – You need to be responsible for your work, plan well for your assignments that there isn’t a point where you are not jobless
  3. Plan finances – Since there is no safety and security in the gig jobs, you need to plan your finances well. As it is not a full-time job, managing finances becomes very important. This could help you when you want to go for a loan too
  4. Quality and consistency – The world is very competitive. Therefore, it is only the quality and consistency of your work that will bring you repeated work and that is very important. This will also help you build a portfolio for yourself

Gig Economy as an opportunity to build flexible, skilled and inclusive workforce

A growing number of gigs, contracts, and part-time jobs are replacing traditional full-time employment globally, termed the “gig economy.” According to the Niti Aayog report, the gig workforce is expected to expand to 2.35 crore (23.5 million) workers by 2029–30.

To understand and learn more about the growth of gig economy in India and how it is an opportunity to create a flexible, skilled and inclusive workforce and to know more about the initiatives from TeamLease Edtech, we conversed with Ms. Neeti Sharma, President and Co-Founder at TeamLease Edtech.

How the gig economy is unfolding a secure future for the informal workforce

According to the Economic Survey 2020-2021, India is fast emerging one of the largest markets for flexi-staffing in the world. “During the period of COVID-19 induced lockdown, the increasing role of the gig economy was evident with significant growth of the online retail business,” said the survey. The gig economy has been formally acknowledged in the Union Budget 2021-22. This might bring about many positive changes in the unorganized sector through social, digital and financial inclusion.

“The arrival of gig would be the game changer for the lower-skilled entry-level workers for whom certification, a permanent job, a social security, and a monthly wage was just not possible”, said Dr. Gayathri Vasudevan, iterating about the possibilities of a secure future for the informal workforce after the gig economy is being formally acknowledged.

Dr. Gayathri Vasudevan, Chairperson, LabourNet, has been making phenomenal contributions towards enabling sustainable livelihoods for millions in India. Now, with the launch of LabourNet’s SAHI platform, a B2B2C gig staffing platform, she is all set to extend the benefits of latest technologies to the informal sector.

With the gig economy’s formal acknowledgement, there are promising prospects for empowering the informal sector and securing a brighter future for millions.

  • We often talk about innovation, future skills, and employability. But the real foundation for all of this is built much earlier, in our schools.Students from PM SHRI Demonstration Multipurpose School (DMS), Bhopal, have developed a smart multi-sensor safety system that can detect gas leaks, fire, temperature, and humidity, along with real-time alerts. What makes this noteworthy is not just the outcome, but the learning process behind it.This is what happens when students move beyond textbooks and engage in hands-on, application-based learning. They don’t just understand concepts; they apply them to solve real-world problems. It’s a reminder that when students are given the right opportunities, guidance, and environment, their potential can translate into meaningful, practical solutions. As conversations around skill education and future readiness continue to grow, there is a clear need to create more such learning experiences in schools, where curiosity, experimentation, and problem-solving are at the core.Because that is where real learning begins.#skilldevelopment #education #studentinnovation #learningbydoing #educationtransformation #STEMEducation #younginnovators
