Education and employment are the key elements in ensuring the empowerment of women. There is a tremendous need for women’s workforce to increase. This is where the skills and entrepreneurship play an important role. Many organizations and the government have come up with several initiatives to achieve women’s empowerment through skill development. 

For years now, women continue to break stereotypes both personally and professionally. With organizations like Roca, Greenply, and Kemppi, women are getting into uncharted job roles like plumbing, carpentry, welding and automotive services. As the year 2020 is fast approaching, let us look at some initiatives and innovative steps taken for women in the domain of skill development and vocational training. As there is a great need for many more women to be aware of the opportunities out there.

Skill India mission empowers women with 10 initiatives in skill development and entrepreneurship

To increase the women’s participation in the workforce, the Skill India Mission aims to empower women with 10 initiatives in skill development and entrepreneurship. Some of them are, projects in Pradhan Mantri Mahila Kaushal Kendra (PMMKK), Short Term Skill Development Training, Entrepreneurship Development Programs for the rural women, etc. Read more

Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) and Ministry of Skill Development (MSDE) partner to improve livelihoods for women

The Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 9th March 2019 to improve women’s livelihood and empower them through skill development. Read more

Pink Collars initiative from Mahindra & Mahindra to recruit women technicians in their workshops

With a drive named “Pink Collars”, Mahindra & Mahindra started an initiative to promote the recruitment of women in core productive roles at automobile workshops. Mahindra kicked off the first batch of Pink Collars in October 2018 and trained 22 girl students selected from various ITIs in districts of western Maharashtra at the Mahindra Institute of Learning Excellence (MILE), Igatpuri. At this high-tech training center, they underwent a free-of-cost 10-day residential training program that brushed up their basics in theory and imparted practical skill development in automotive service and repair. Kemppi’s National Best Welder competitions catalyze new professional avenues for women in welding

The National Best Welder Competition, Season 2 – Finals was held in Chennai on 6th December 2019. The participants took part in two categories of competitions – one for working women and the other for students. Kemppi India and Nextgen Plasma in association with the Indian Institute of Welding (IIW) organized the National Level Welding Competitions for women in Best Structural Welder, Best Pipe Welder, and Best Student Welder. Tata Motors Limited’s skill development programs in the automotive sector are empowering young girls to take up a career in the automobile industry. As part of a unique initiative to promote “Skill India Mission”, Tata Motors has collaborated with NSDC (National Skills Development Corporation) and Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) for automotive skills development and certification programs.
