The National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) organized a wonderful 2-days workshop for the members and leaders of domestic workers unions from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Goa, and Madhya Pradesh etc. on 27 and 28th November 2018, at St Pius X College, Mumbai Maharashtra. The meet was also attended by the state coordinators of NDWM.
Workshop on skill development for domestic workers
The 2-day congregation saw discussion on multitude of topics like increasing the wages, initiatives in housing, gender based violence etc. and Domestic Workers Sector Skill Council was provided with a slot to address the attendees about the benefits of Skill Development and the long term impact of their overall livelihood improvement. It was wonderful to see that the domestic workers were showing interest on their individual skill development and interacted with us regarding our job roles, placements, wages and migration.
Overall, we were successful in putting forward the idea that skill development is one of the core areas which can leverage the respect and dignity of domestic workers through professionalizing and organizing this sector.
Benefits of the workshop
NDWM has been working towards empowering the domestic workers for the past 35 years and as of today, they have a very strong network across the country and showcase powerful understanding of the said segment. Apart from spreading the word about DWSSC and the need for training in this domain, some of the noteworthy benefits that DWSSC had by attending this meet were:
- Window of opportunity to get increased mobilization in places we already have a strong hold in like Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.
- Meeting various state union leaders at one platform.
- Partner with NDWM for future advocacy in all their coordinators state and increase our presence.
It requires great collaborations, partnerships and workshops such as this for connecting the dots while working towards attaining our goal as an SSC and thus help commence the change we want to see in future.
