PM Internship Scheme App launched to make Internships more accessible for youth

The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) took a significant leap forward with the launch of its dedicated mobile app by Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman on March 17, 2025. Designed to streamline the internship application process, the PMIS App serves as a one-stop platform for young aspirants seeking industry exposure. The app is aimed at students, fresh graduates, and young job seekers, providing them with seamless access to internship opportunities in top Indian companies across various sectors.

Key features of the PMIS App

The newly launched app simplifies the application process and ensures seamless access to internship opportunities for eligible youth. Some of the app’s notable features include:

  • Intuitive Interface: A clean and user-friendly design for easy navigation.
  • Aadhaar-Based Registration: Candidates can register using Aadhaar face authentication.
  • Effortless Opportunity Search: Filter internships based on location, sector, and qualifications.
  • Personalized Dashboard: Track application status and updates in real-time.
  • Dedicated Support Team: Provides assistance for queries and issues.
  • Real-Time Alerts: Keeps candidates updated on new opportunities and deadlines.

Bridging the gap between education and employment

During the launch, Smt. Sitharaman emphasized the PMIS’s potential to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry demands, ultimately improving youth employability. She encouraged industry participation, stating that their involvement is crucial for nation-building and fostering a skilled workforce.

Shri Harsh Malhotra highlighted that the app will greatly enhance accessibility, making it easier for young aspirants to secure valuable industry exposure.

PM Internship Scheme: An overview

First announced in the Union Budget 2024-25, the PM Internship Scheme aims to provide one crore youth with internship opportunities in India’s top 500 companies over five years. A pilot phase was initiated on October 3, 2024, targeting 1.25 lakh internships for the financial year 2024-25.

Salient Features of the Scheme

  • 12-Month Paid Internships: Interns gain hands-on experience in industry settings.
  • Financial Assistance: Monthly stipend of ₹5,000 and a one-time grant of ₹6,000.
  • Eligibility: Open to individuals aged 21-24 who are not engaged in full-time studies or employment.
  • Sector-Wide Opportunities: Covers diverse fields such as IT, Banking, Automobile, and Hospitality.

Progress of the pilot phase: Round I and II

The pilot project was launched in two rounds:

Round 1 (October – December 2024):

  • 1.27 lakh internships posted across 745 districts.
  • 280 companies participated across 25 sectors.
  • 82,000 offers were extended to candidates.

Round 2 (January – March 2025):

  • 1.18 lakh internship opportunities posted by 327 companies.
  • Opportunities include 37,000 for graduates, 23,000 for ITI holders, 18,000 for diploma holders, 15,000 for 12th-grade pass-outs, and 25,000 for 10th-pass candidates.
  • Expanded to 735 districts nationwide.
  • Industries include Automobile, Finance, Travel and Hospitality, and Sales and Marketing and more.

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has also launched a referral program, allowing registered candidates to refer others and earn rewards.

Enhanced accessibility and outreach

To increase awareness and accessibility, several enhancements were made in Round II:

  • User-friendly dashboard on the PMIS portal.
  • Detailed role descriptions for clarity.
  • 80+ outreach events conducted at educational institutions and Rozgar Melas.
  • Performance framework introduced to assess the effectiveness of the scheme across states and UTs.

How to apply

Eligible candidates can apply for the PM Internship Scheme through the PMIS Mobile App, now available for Android and iOS users, or via the official portal: https://pminternship.mca.gov.in/. The application deadline for Round 2 is March 31, 2025.
