How Can We Build Employability into Everyday Teaching? Part 1 – Curriculum and Pedagogy

On 15 October 2026, Team NSN organised a webinar on “How Can We Build Employability Into Everyday Teaching and Training?”, focusing on pedagogy and curriculum. The session was facilitated by Dr. Madhuri Dubey and Divya Saikumar and explored how educators and trainers can integrate employability into everyday learning rather than treating it as a separate subject or an additional module.

The webinar highlighted the importance of connecting subject knowledge with real-world application and helping learners develop the capabilities they need to enter the world of work, contribute effectively, adapt to change and continue learning.

Rethinking employability in teaching and training

Employability is often treated as an add-on to academic or vocational learning, addressed through separate modules, placement preparation or soft-skills sessions. However, the webinar presented a broader approach: employability can be built into the way educators teach, the activities learners undertake, the problems they solve and the way their learning is assessed.

Employability involves more than securing a job. It includes the ability to contribute effectively at work, adapt as job roles and workplaces change, learn continuously and navigate unfamiliar situations.

This broader view connects three elements: knowledge, application and human capabilities. Learners need to understand concepts and technical procedures, but they also need opportunities to use that knowledge, make decisions, solve problems and communicate their thinking.

How can everyday learning develop employability?

The webinar illustrated how familiar classroom and training activities can be designed to develop employability alongside subject knowledge. The approach does not necessarily require a new curriculum. It involves rethinking how existing content is taught and applied.

A school-level example: Preparing a budget for a school event

Students learning spreadsheets or financial literacy could be asked to prepare a budget for a school event within a fixed amount. They would compare options, allocate resources, justify their choices and present the final budget.

The activity reinforces calculations, spreadsheet skills and budgeting while also developing decision-making, problem-solving, teamwork and communication.

Teachers can assess more than the accuracy of the calculations. They can also observe how students justify their decisions, compare alternatives and respond to constraints.

The example demonstrates how a subject-based activity can become an opportunity to develop employability when learners use their knowledge to complete a meaningful task.

A technical training example: Troubleshooting an electrical circuit

In an ITI or technical course, trainees could be asked to troubleshoot a circuit with a simulated fault rather than simply assemble it by following instructions.

They would need to follow safety procedures, identify the likely cause, test their diagnosis, correct the fault and explain their approach.

This exercise develops technical competence alongside systematic problem-solving, safety awareness, attention to detail and technical communication. It also gives instructors an opportunity to observe how trainees approach a problem and explain the steps they take to resolve it.

How Can We Build Employability into Everyday Teaching Part 1 - Curriculum and Pedagogy

A short-term skill training example: Handling a customer complaint

In a customer-service training program, learners could practice responding to a complaint about an incorrect order. They would need to listen to the customer, verify the details, explain available options and resolve the issue within their authority.

The activity develops familiarity with customer-service procedures while encouraging listening, communication, judgement, problem-solving and professional conduct.

The emphasis is on more than knowing the steps in a procedure. Learners must demonstrate that they can apply those steps appropriately in a real or simulated workplace situation.

The employability lens: Five questions for educators

To help educators integrate employability into their existing teaching and training activities, the webinar presented five questions that can be used to review a lesson, assignment or practical exercise.

  1. What should learners know? Identify the key concepts, facts or technical skills they need to learn.
  2. What should learners do with it? Design a task, practical exercise or problem in which they apply their knowledge.
  3. What choices must they make? Give learners opportunities to make decisions, solve problems or select from alternatives.
  4. How will they explain their thinking? Ask them to communicate their reasoning, justify decisions or present their solutions.
  5. What will we observe or assess? Identify the evidence that will demonstrate their learning and employability capabilities and provide constructive feedback.

These questions can be adapted across school education, vocational training and higher education. For example, students could investigate waste-management practices in their neighborhood and recommend improvements, trainees could identify a performance issue during a solar panel installation exercise, or higher education students could document their decisions and outcomes in a project portfolio.

Across these contexts, the emphasis remains on applying knowledge, making informed decisions and explaining the process and outcomes.

Building employability without rewriting the syllabus

The examples discussed during the webinar highlighted that technical competence and employability can be developed together. An existing academic assignment, practical exercise or training activity can provide opportunities for learners to practice workplace-relevant capabilities when it includes a meaningful context, a decision to make or a problem to solve.

Educators can begin by identifying the knowledge or technical skills learners need, creating an opportunity to apply them, asking learners to explain their reasoning and providing feedback on both the task outcome and the capabilities demonstrated.

This approach allows teachers and trainers to make manageable changes to their existing practices rather than redesigning an entire syllabus or introducing a separate employability course.

A practical starting point for educators

The central message from the webinar was to move beyond what learners know to what they can do with what they know. Developing employability is not limited to adding new content; it also involves creating learning experiences in which learners can practice, explain and improve.

Educators and trainers can begin with one lesson, assignment or practical activity they already conduct and ask: What small change would help learners apply their knowledge and practice a capability they will need at work?

Such changes can help make employability an integral part of everyday teaching and training, connecting learning more closely with the world beyond the classroom.

  • Employability Interaction with CTS Students at NSTI-W Hyderabad

Technical training gives students the foundation for a career. But employability also depends on how well they communicate, collaborate, solve problems, adapt to change and apply what they learn. At NSTI-W Hyderabad, CTS students get opportunities to develop these capabilities alongside their technical training.

Team NSN visited NSTI Women, Hyderabad, to interact with CTS students and faculty and understand their learning experiences across different trades.

The visit offered a glimpse into the practical nature of training at the institute. Students across areas such as Cosmetology, Architectural Draughtsman, Fashion Design Technology and AI & IoT were engaged in hands-on learning and working on projects connected to their respective trades.
