A full-time one-month industrial internship programme (certificate course) was offered by the Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing and Automation (CoEMA), OP Jindal University a division of the Centre for Sustainable Technology and Product Development (CSTPD), from 6th June to 5th July 2022.

Industry, the government, and academia have all identified advanced manufacturing as a key factor in the nation’s future economic growth. A degree alone is no longer sufficient in the current environment of educational competition; one must also hone in-demand technical skills. As a result, internships are now a crucial tool for helping candidates differentiate themselves from the competition which was one of the main reasons behind the one-month industrial internship programme by CoEMA.

Participants from numerous prestigious institutions from all over Chhattisgarh participated in the internship, which was primarily focused on giving students practical knowledge by using the Learning-by-Doing approach. This multifaceted, one-of-a-kind centre provides training programmes, internships, help with R&D, and industrial consulting services in a range of industries.

The Internship included the module starting from basic to advanced welding technologies, sessions on weld quality, underwater welding, actuation technologies, Robotic welding and programming and hands-on sessions in Virtual welding simulators covering MAG, MMAW, and TIG in various positions of the workpiece. The students obtained real experience in using advanced welding machines to prepare jobs in different positions.

OP Jindal University's Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing and Automation (CoEMA) organizes a one-month Industrial Internship ProgramThe participants also performed non-destructive testing to assess the quality of welding. The internship also included the invited talks by industry experts from Wearresist Technology Pvt Ltd, Ador Welding Ltd, Electronic Devices Worldwide Pvt Ltd, Ador Fontech Ltd, Fronius India pvt. Ltd.,Yaskawa India pvt. Ltd. and The Indian Institute of Welding (IIW). The talks include concepts on Robotic Arc Welding, occupational health and safety, Repair & Maintenance Welding in Steel Industry, New developments in Plasma Cutting Technology, Advances in TIG Welding from Semi-Automatic to Fully Automatic Machines and many more.

The internal faculty resource person from Mechanical Engineering Department Dr Umesh Vishwakarma, Dr Siddharth S Chakrabarti, Dr Mahesh Bhiwapurkar, Prof Jitesh Singh & Mr Narendra Deshmukh conducted different sessions.

Additionally, the participants had the chance to use the OPJU innovation center’s CNC routers, laser engravers, and 3D printers. This distinctive centre is developing a platform for start-ups by aspiring entrepreneurs to convert their innovative constructs into marketable products. They had the opportunity to tour industrial behemoths like Jindal Power Limited, Tamnar, Nalwa Steel and Power Limited, Structural Steel Division, and Jindal Steel and Power.

The pant visits include training on the Power Plant simulator, state of art manufacturing facilities, power plant equipment and the steel-making processes. The participants also made a visit to Kelo Project (Chhattisgarh) which envisages the construction of an earthen dam with concrete/ masonry spillway across river Kelo, a tributary of river Mahanadi. They get familiar with catchment areas, hydraulic gates, level of water, wing wall, and body wall.
