To take India to USD 5 trillion mark skilling needed in disruptive tech: To make India a $5 trillion economy by 2024-2025 as the Industry 4.0 arrives, the country urgently needs a renewed focus on skilling the youth in advanced technologies like robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), 3D printing, data analytics and quantum computing.

For World Youth Skills Day 2019, TikTok Partners with NSDC with Skills4All Campaign: NSDC has partnered with TikTok to celebrate World Youth Skills Day 2019 by launching an in-app campaign #Skills4All. From this collaboration, NSDC wants to leverage the platform to educate TikTok’s over 200 million users including the first time Internet users in India about the ongoing government-driven skill development programs and vocational training opportunities in the country.

Vocational content must in non-technical UG courses as per EQUIP: As per the Education Quality Upgradation and Inclusion Programme (EQUIP) report, there is a huge gap between the skill needs of the Indian economy and the supply of graduates. It states that non-technical, non-professional degree courses should have 20-35 per cent vocational content.

Skill development news from the industry

Indian pharma companies like Lupin are helping job aspirants get employed: Lupin’s Learn and Earn programme has trained a total of 560 young people since it started in 2011. Many of the trainees are from marginalised communities and rural backgrounds. The company plans to scale up the programme to 1,000 people by 2020. Apart from Pharma related skills they are taught behavioral skills like communication, ethics, leadership, planning and time management.

Over Rs 614 crore spent on CSR activities by ONGC in FY19: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. has spent over Rs 614 crore on CSR initiatives in the last financial year. The funds were spent on 1,758 projects related to health and hygiene, water and sanitation, education, development work, old age homes, sports, financial assistance, skill development, river cleaning etc.

Skill development news from the states

Andhra Pradesh

Skill development centre launched at VIET: A Skill development centre was launched at Visakha Institute of Engineering and Technology (VIET) in AP. The College Chairman appealed to students to avail the opportunity and harness their skills.

Jobs offered to 210 candidates in job mela by APSSDC: 210 candidates out of the 397 were offered jobs in various companies in the mega job mela held in association with the Kandukur Municipality at Kandukur,

MoU signed between EFLU and IIM for skill development and capacity-building: English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad and IIM Visakhapatnam, signed a MoU for mutual capacity-building and skill development. They aim to attain standards of global excellence in common areas of research and teaching that interest both the parties.

Jammu and Kashmir

Arshad Mir is the new Co-Chairman of Handicrafts and Carpet Sector Skill Council: Arshad Mir has been elected as the new Co-Chairman of Handicrafts and Carpet Sector Skill Council. He intends to mainstream the artisans of Jammu and Kashmir facilitating them through skill development opportunities under skill India mission.

Jan Shikshan Sansthan organises Kuashal Yuva Samwaad in Jammu : Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) hosted Kaushal Yuva Samwaad (Youth Skill Parliament) at Jammu. 40-50 candidates Attended the event, the discussion was organized amongst the trainees who were registered for skill training under Skill India Mission.

Karnataka

MRPL opening 50 retail outlets in Karnataka: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) is opening 50 more outlets to expand in Karnataka. It has spent 133 crores in CSR expenditure in the last 5 years, MRPL has also provided job-oriented skill development training to 135 youth residing in its surroundings of which 100 opted for employment with the company. It is also offering internships to 225 students from Karnataka every year for the last five years.

Kerala

ADP calls to focus on skill development programmes in Kerala: Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) nodal officer said that more focus should be given to skill development programmes to ensure job opportunities for youth and students. 25,000 tribal youths and students to be trained in various job sectors in Wayanad.

Punjab

Sensitisation workshop for the growth of small and medium enterprises: Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) along with Textile Sector Skill Council and Foundation of MSME cluster have conducted a sensitisation programme for small and medium size textile mills situated in and around the border in Amritsar.

MANUU and Maxcure Hospitals sign MoU: Maulana Azad National Urdu University and Maxcure Hospitals (Hyderabad) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for starting UGC sanctioned Bachelor of Vocational programmes in Medical Laboratory Technology and Medical Imaging Technology under National Skill Qualification Framework scheme.
