The first half of April saw some hectic activities in the skills space with two major government initiatives at Deoghar, Jharkhand and Motihari – Champaran, Bihar. On the international front, we saw the keen interest from the Governments of Malaysia and Australia in contributing to Indian’s skilling mission through entrepreneurship development and promotion of apprenticeships. At the state level, the scene was equally vibrant with several initiatives. Let’s get updated with happenings in various states and industry sectors. Here’s updating you with the next edition of skill development news digest 180417.

News from the states

Andhra Pradesh: A 3-day training programme was held in Padmapuram in Araku Valley for 100 volunteers of tribal area on facilitation skills, social security, safety net schemes and community mobilisation skills at Tribal Foundation campus

Arunachal Pradesh: Skill India Training Center imparted 3 months of skills training under “Employment through Skills Training and Placement” (ESTP) component of (DAY-NULM) for 40 beneficiaries that included Trade-Field Technician (Computing & Peripherals)

Bihar: 1. 100 years of Champaran Satyagraha was commemorated with a host of skilling and job fair initiatives in Motihari, Champaran 2. IL&FS launches RPL under PMKVY for dairy farmer and entrepreneur in Bihar in partnership with Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI).

Delhi: 1. To enhance opportunities in IT careers, Cisco will train 250000 in Security and IoT over a period of time. 2. Walmart to support to women entrepreneurs in India by giving them professional and soft skills training.

Gujarat: Maritime university to come up near Ahmedabad or Gandhinagar at a total cost of Rs800 crore

Jharkhand: 1.Deoghar saw several skill development initiatives being launched for the welfare of youth in Jharkhand including the inauguration of driver training institutes by the honourable President of India.2. Uber to create 1 million micro-entrepreneurs by 2018 in driving segment. The company has committed to providing economic opportunities to the graduating drivers as part of its flagship initiative, UberSHAAN.

Madhya Pradesh: Indo-American Friends Group decides to open a skill development center in Indore.

Maharashtra: 1. Adani Power Maharashtra Limited (APML) sets up a skill development centre in Tiroda, Gondia for training in augmented reality (AR) simulator tool to benefit 500 students in the region. 2. Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) and Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB), Malaysia, signed an MoU to promote skilling and entrepreneurship in India. 3.Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has started 30 days training programme on “Organic Growers” for the dropout students as per the guidelines of Agriculture Skill Council of India at Regional Centre of Organic Farming (RCOF).

Manipur: First ever skills training center launched in Ukhrul for imparting training in various job –oriented skills

Nagaland: 1. Inauguration of skill training centre at Mon town to skill underprivileged Scheduled Tribe (ST) youth and women of “backward” districts of Nagaland through ICT under IT for masses and Digital India Programme 2. KVK Dimapur conducted skill training for ‘Vermicompost Producer’ and ‘Broiler Poultry Farm Worker’ sponsored by Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI

Odisha: Government of Odisha and Asian Development Bank (ADB) held discussions to negotiate for  $175-million Odisha Skill Development Project.

Punjab: 1. Rockman Skill Development Centre (RSDC), Ludhiana held a convocation ceremony for the first batch of students who completed training in automotive skills. 2. PNB Housing Finance (PNBHF) forms a joint venture with CREDAI to train construction workers in masonry, bar bending, shuttering and electricals.

Telangana: Khadi Gramodyog Maha Vidyalaya (KGMV) to conduct training for retired army personnel to generate employment in rural areas and reduce migration.

News from the Central Government

  • Honourable President Shri Pranab Mukherjee laid the foundation for 35 Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Kendras (PMKK) in Deoghar, Jharkhand and appreciated the efforts of the state government in skill development for scripting the future of a developed India.
  • Mr. Manish Kumar, IAS, CEO, NSDC emphasized on the services sector for skilling since the manufacturing sector has not been growing as expected. The focus areas would be Tourism, Hospitality and Healthcare.
  • India-Australia partnership in skill development and vocational education gets a boost with the meetings between the Australia’s Minister for Education and Training and the Indian counterparts. Australia will extend support to skilling India scale up apprenticeship program.

The Central Government will soon make public the findings of the report made by Sharda Prasad committee, which was formed by the government to re-evaluate the National Skill Development Mission. The committee has reportedly advised to reduce the number of sector skill councils (SSCs) from 40 to around 20 by merging identical sector councils and curtail their powers of assessment of skill training centres. (as quoted in the media)

  • As per recommendations of the Committee of Secretaries, 23,000 polytechnic colleges – with 16 lakh engineering students will be brought under ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE).
  • MSDE collaborates with Bhartiya Yuva Shakti Trust (BYST) to boost Skill based entrepreneurship among underprivileged in rural areas.
  • Government seeks inputs from IIM, JNU and Harvard to review the skill development programs to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness.

News from the Industry sectors

Sports: The Former Indian Cricket Captain Mr. Ravi Shastri has joined hands with Greycells Education as Mentor and Advisor for their skill training initiatives in sports and events.

Healthcare: VIVO Healthcare enter into a 3-year partnership with Siemens Healthineers, India to introduce Medical Lab Technician (MLT) course with high quality practical outcome-based curricula.

Textiles: Power Tex India scheme launched by the Central Government to facilitate investment, skilling and manufacturing for Make in India.

But what helps you navigate it?That was the conversation we explored last week at NSTI Women, Hyderabad, during our session on the human side of employability with the young CTS students.The students participated with enthusiasm and curiosity.
