It was great news for space science yesterday! ISRO’s successful launch of 104 satellites in one go is new world record. The ISRO feat shows us how any mission is absolutely possible to accomplish with top-class research, coordination, planning, execution, project management and above all exemplary teamwork. Truly inspirational! Coming to the skill space during last fortnight, there were interesting developments with the launch of SkillGrid digital platform by THSC, the MoU between NSDC and Airbus for Aerospace skills Center of Excellence, the DWSSC skills event in Delhi, besides reflections and interpretations the budget 2017. Here’s updating you with the next edition of skill development news digest 160217.

News from the states

  • Andhra Pradesh: Andhra University inaugurates a skill development center to to help students develop their communication and technical skills for job placements in any industry.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: A 6-week skill training program on “electrical wiring activities” for the unemployed youths was organized by the North East Multipurpose Development Society (NEMDS) in Naharlagun, sponsored by SIDBI.
  • Delhi: SkillTrain launches a Mobile App for reach more youth through technology-enabled vocational training. The company expects to reach 2,500 people this year with ‘blended mobile app-offline centres’ strategy.
  • Delhi: National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), partners with Anuna Education for implementing pan-India eCommerce training for industrial/artisan clusters and village level entrepreneurs (VLE).
  • Delhi: Japan would skill 40,000 technical people in 10 years by collaborating with engineering colleges and other institutions said Japanese Ambassador to India, Kenji Hiramatsu.
  • Delhi: Laghu Udyog Bharati, signed an MoU with NSDC to impart skill based training to students in sectors like apparel, automotive, beauty and wellness, textiles, gems and jewellery, handicrafts, carpets, healthcare, IT and ITeS.
  • Delhi: Delhi police will train 60 juvenile offenders in baking and other skills so that they can find jobs and make a living.
  • Gujarat: Gujarat Technical University will offer part-time skill development courses on the lines of Diploma courses. Only institutes that have approval from NSDC and AICTE are entitled to offer these courses
  • Haryana: IL&FS Skills launches Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program in the Apparel sector under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 2.0 in collaboration with Shivalik Prints, a leading knitwear manufacturer and exporter at Faridabad.
  • Jammu and Kashmir: Rajouri district has come up with plans to train women in skillful activities like handicrafts for employment and empowerment. There are 23 employment centres in far-flung areas of Rajouri.
  • Karnataka: Deshpande Foundation will set up India’s largest skill development centre in Hubbali. The center will start functioning from April 2017.
  • Odisha: Centurion University signs an MoU with Technical & Further Education (TAFE) Commission of New South Wales of Australia for exchanging knowledge and the best practices, focusing on integration of skill development with mainstream education.
  • Maharashtra: Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) inaugurates ‘Skills on Wheels’, a mobile training and assessment center, to provide RPL in Motor Rewinding, Solar Skills through training and accreditation of electricians.
  • Punjab: Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU) partners with SAP Student Academy to provide certified training courses to its engineering students.
  • Punjab: 80 students successfully complete basic computer course in Bathinda, at Kamson Institute. National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) under their CSR sponsored the course.
  • Rajasthan: The Rajasthan ILD Skills University (RISU) will soon function from a 33-acre sprawling and picturesque ILD campus situated on the outskirts of Jaipur.
  • Tamil Nadu: A survey by Cambridge English says that 40% of companies in India consider reading English as an important criterion while recruiting an employee.

News from the industry sectors

  • Rubber industry: Rubber Skill Development Council (RSDC) collaborates with Hindustan University, Chennai for imparting skill development programs in Rubber Technology.
  • Pharma industry: Health ministry asks All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) and Healthcare Sector Skill Council (HSSC) to chart out training programs to non-pharmacists for preparing them for jobs as pharmacy assistants.
  • Automotive industry: Uber and Ola partner with NSDC to train about 5 lakh drivers in the next three years. In addition to that, there is a proposal to train about 30,000 cargo delivery persons for an online market place.
  • Manufacturing sector: Dassault Systemes plans to skill, nurture talent in Indian 3D printing market since 3D printing and additive manufacturing industry set to grow exponentially in the coming years. They will also nurture domestic start-ups via its incubator programme.

News from the central government

  • While emphasizing on having right information and skills for international jobs, Rajya Sabha was informed that about 6,000 Indian nationals have landed in various jails abroad as they did not have the necessary skills or were sent there by unscrupulous agents
  • As a major step towards gender empowerment, the government has increased allocations for women by 27% to Rs 1.84 lakh crore in 2017-2018 from Rs 1.56 lakh crore in 2016-2017. This will be achieved by Mahila Shakti Kendras for skill development among women.
  • The ministries of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) have come together to reduce dropout rate and increase enrolments at primary, secondary and higher secondary levels of school education.

  • COL-CEMCA Conducts Three-Day Workshop on Graduate Employability at YCMOU, Nashik, MaharashtraDr. Madhuri Dubey, Founder-Director, NSN, facilitated the workshop as a part of the Commonwealth of Learning - Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CoL-CEMCA) Project on enhancing graduate employability by integrating appropriate skills into the curriculum.The workshop was organized by CoL-CEMCA in collaboration with Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nashik, from 10th to 12th March, 2026, at the YCMOU campus in Nashik, Maharashtra under the guidance of Dr. B. Shadrach, Director, CEMCA and Dr Jane Agbu , Adviser Higher Education, Commonwealth of Learning.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Sanjeev Sonawane, honourable Vice-Chancellor, YCMOU, and coordinated by Dr. Amol Shirfule, Director i/c, Yash Center for Innovation, Incubation and Linkages and Dr. Nagarjun Wadekar, Director, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, YCMOU.As a part of the comprehensive Graduate Employability Project, the workshop brought together academic leaders representing different schools of specialization, course coordinators, and faculty members from YCMOU to strengthen curriculum design with a focus on employability skills and industry relevance.The workshop emphasised the transition from traditional content-driven teaching to outcome-based education using the Results-Based Management (RBM) Framework.
