“For the first-ever educational institute, skilling institutions and industry are coming together to synergize efforts to certify and future-proof youth,” stated Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India.

In the dynamic landscape of skill development, Indian Institutes of Skills (IIS) are emerging as beacons of excellence, shaping the future of education and training in India. Among these, the Indian Institute of Skills Mumbai stands out as a prime example, a joint venture between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), the Government of India, and the Tata Group.

The IIS platform serves as the gateway to world-class training, presenting the vision and mission of IIS to transform the skill landscape of the nation.

A Guide to the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS)

The Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) aims to elevate training standards, moving beyond the current skill ecosystem and providing hands-on skills training to individuals in specialized areas such as Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Analytics, Mechatronics and more. With a focus on creating sectoral experts, IIS seeks to bridge the gap between industry requirements and the skill set of the workforce.

Established across the country, IISs are strategically positioned to offer NSQF-compliant 2-year diploma courses in identified sectors. These courses blend conventional and advanced areas, offering a unique pathway for trainees to ascend into supervisory and managerial roles within their respective fields.

Objectives of IIS

IIS aims to redefine skill training standards by going beyond current programs and providing hands-on, specialized training in collaboration with industries. The goal is to create sectoral experts and facilitate vertical mobility for trainees. With a focus on Maharashtra (Mumbai), Gujarat (Ahmedabad), and Uttar Pradesh (Kanpur), IIS is a testament to India’s commitment to global competitiveness and youth empowerment.

IIS impact across India

The Government of India’s vision has given rise to Indian Institutes of Skills (IISs) in three crucial locations: Mumbai, Kanpur, and Ahmedabad. In a recent development, IIS Kanpur has partnered with IIT Kanpur, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and Dassault Aircraft Services India (DASI), emphasizing its commitment to industry collaboration. Simultaneously, a tri-party agreement in Gandhinagar between the Government of Gujarat, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and Tata IIS highlights Gujarat’s dedication to skill development. These strategic initiatives ensure widespread access to advanced skill training, contributing to the nation’s overall progress and competitiveness which cater to the needs of the industry.

  • We often talk about innovation, future skills, and employability. But the real foundation for all of this is built much earlier, in our schools.Students from PM SHRI Demonstration Multipurpose School (DMS), Bhopal, have developed a smart multi-sensor safety system that can detect gas leaks, fire, temperature, and humidity, along with real-time alerts. What makes this noteworthy is not just the outcome, but the learning process behind it.This is what happens when students move beyond textbooks and engage in hands-on, application-based learning. They don’t just understand concepts; they apply them to solve real-world problems. It’s a reminder that when students are given the right opportunities, guidance, and environment, their potential can translate into meaningful, practical solutions. As conversations around skill education and future readiness continue to grow, there is a clear need to create more such learning experiences in schools, where curiosity, experimentation, and problem-solving are at the core.Because that is where real learning begins.#skilldevelopment #education #studentinnovation #learningbydoing #educationtransformation #STEMEducation #younginnovators
