The telecom industry in India has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, solidifying its position as the world’s second-largest telecom market. With a massive workforce of 11.59 million employees, it has become the third-largest industry in the country. Today, India is the largest connected country with more than 800 million internet users. As technology enters the Web 3.0 era, the industry is poised for further expansion, and the role of village-level entrepreneurs is becoming increasingly crucial for connectivity and network maintenance. Additionally, a strategic focus on upskilling and reskilling at the village level is essential for the industry’s future growth.

This article is an overview of skill development and village-level entrepreneurship in the telecom sector with a glimpse into in-demand entry-level job roles in the sector.

Skill development and village-level entrepreneurship in the telecom sector: An overview

  • CSC and Adani Capital Collaboration: CSC (Common Service Centers) and Adani Capital have joined forces to provide financial support to village-level entrepreneurs. Business loan approvals have already been granted to 100 Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs) associated with CSC Grameen e-stores. In the coming three months, an additional 1500 VLEs will be covered, expanding their access to capital.
  • Vibrant Village Programme: The Vibrant Village Programme, initiated by the government, aims to cover 662 villages located near the Line of Actual Control in various states. This program will enhance connectivity in remote regions, ensuring that even isolated areas receive telecommunication services. • BharatNet Project: The government has allocated ₹1.39 lakh crore for the BharatNet Project, the largest rural telecom project in India. This initiative will provide last-mile optical fiber-based broadband connectivity to households in all the villages. The involvement of village-level entrepreneurs will play a vital role in ensuring connectivity and the ongoing upkeep of these connections. Currently, the new BharatNet Udyami project has already distributed 351,000 fiber connections, and this initiative has the potential to create employment opportunities for more than 250,000 entrepreneurs.

The Indian telecommunications industry is on a path of unprecedented growth and expansion, and its future success relies on the empowerment of village-level entrepreneurs and a strong emphasis on skill development. Recent collaborations and initiatives have set the stage for improving connectivity in remote areas and providing access to capital for budding entrepreneurs. As the industry continues to evolve in the Web 3.0 era, these efforts will be instrumental in achieving its goals and serving the needs of the Indian population.
