The discussions around the need for skilling, apprenticeships and entrepreneurship at the recently held Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2017 in Hyderabad highlighted the fact these these are universal issues that need global attention and deliberation. In this edition of our news digest we present to you news snippets from various states and industry sector for a glimpse of what was in the headlines in the last fortnight. Arunachal Pradesh: The CM announced that Skill University will be set up for imparting skills and employment opportunities outside the government space for the youth in the state.

Assam: 1. In a summit organised by India Foundation, the Nagaland CM called for creating a ‘Tourist Circuit’ for the North-east in order to connect each festival of the eight States of the region. 2. At the Northeast Development Summit the need for overall development of the northeastern states was stressed by improving the region’s connectivity with the outside world via air and waterways. 3. Over 500 girls from different parts of Guwahati attended the first beauty and wellness job fair in the city. About 200 were shortlisted for training and subsequent employment in the companies that took part in the fair.

Delhi

  • Textile Sector Skill Council of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry has won an award called the Champion Skill Council for the best performing skill council among the 40 sector skill councils for skilling the workforce for textile industry.
  • The Bihar Skill Development mission started a Recruit-Train and Deploy model, which would strengthen the skilling mission and effectively help in skilling the youth.
  • At Delhi’s state stall in the India International Trade Fair, the incubation centre has been a huge success. Under the scheme ‘Startup India , Standup India’, which got a grant of 1.5 crore, a total of 43 start-ups have been incubated, from social and marketing entrepreneurs to business enterprises and high-end technology.
  • The Women and Child Development ministry is working with Sashastra Seema Bal to help rehabilitate children placed in child care centres in areas near SSB outposts. These centres will provide vocational skills to the children as an effort to rehabilitate them.
  • The Ministry of Shipping will set up a world class Center of Excellence in Maritime and Ship Building in collaboration with Siemens and the Indian Register of Shipping with centres in Mumbai and Vishakapatnam.
  • As per a joint study by Indian industry body ASSOCHAM and a Chicago-based professional services firm India’s food processing sector can attract USD 33 billion as investments by 2024.
  • 3M India Limited and HSSC have signed a MOU for creating a robust and vibrant eco-system for quality vocational education and skill development in healthcare.
  • Amity Skills, has partnered with DDU–GKY Rajasthan and Bihar, to set up training centers across Rajasthan and Bihar to provide short term training programmes in both technical and non-technical skills.
  • According to a report the luxury market in India is growing at a steady pace and by 2022 the total manpower required to handle luxury brands and services will be around 1.76 million people.
  • The UGC’s Joint Secretary & Chief Vigilance Officer said that they are focussing on skilling youth in India and providing online courses to the students.
  • Amazon has partnered with SEWA and Impulse Social Enterprise for boosting women entrepreneurship in the country and launched ‘The Saheli Store’ for products curated by women entrepreneurs.
  • Goa: A Norwegian delegation came to Goa to explore partnerships in the shipping, renewable energy, defence manufacturing and information technology. Norway has offered technology support to help Goa address its energy needs and also offered to assist local shipyards with modern shipbuilding technology.

Jharkhand: The Newly established Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University will soon start operating from Vinoba Bhave University’s regional centre which will focus on skill development courses in addition to academic ones.

Karnataka: The Karnataka government said the state aims to provide skills to 18.8 million youth from now till 2030, which includes an annual target of 13.4 lakh existing workforce and new recruits.

Kerala: The Minister for Shipping laid the foundation stone for the International Ship Repair Facility of Cochin Ship Yard Limited and said that Cochin is ready to become a global ship repair hub.

Manipur: ICAR Research Complex, Manipur Centre, successfully completed an eight day Model Training Course on “Entrepreneurship and Skill Development on Market Driven Production and Processing of High Value Crops for NEH region”.

Odisha: The Institute of Chemical Technology, in Mumbai, signed a MOU with the Indian Oil Corporation to set up a campus in Odisha which will provide skills training to unemployed youths of the state and will be later placed in various streams of the petrochemical industries.

Punjab: The Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Chandigarh conducted a Chocolate for Charity programme as at a Government School to impart vocational training to students for the welfare of marginalized children by making chocolates.

Rajasthan: 1. Minister of skill development and entrepreneurship asked all skill development institutes to teach foreign languages so that the youth can find employment in the overseas industries too. 2. Jaswant Yadav said that more than 900 government and private ITIs were set up in Rajasthan in the last four years.

Telangana: 1. Hyundai Motor India, inaugurated the Hyundai Professional Development Center in Hyderabad. This is part of its CSR programme and support to community enhancement through tie-ups with leading polytechnic institutes. 2. A Skill Development Training Programme was inaugurated at Vizag for differently-abled people which is a maiden venture of RINL’s CSR wing. 3. Skill development, apprenticeships and entrepreneurship was one of the key focus areas at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2017 held at Hyderabad.

West Bengal: As there are a large number of people belonging to SC, ST and OBCs, the state Government wants corporates to invest in education and skill development in far-flung areas.
