Skilling youth for a better future is not just about teaching technical expertise, it’s about inspiring confidence, fostering continuous learning, and bridging the gap between education and industry. Trainers play a crucial role in shaping the careers of young professionals by equipping them with hands-on experience, industry-aligned training, and mentorship.

“My biggest motivation comes from seeing students understand concepts and gain confidence in their skills.” – Mr. Avinash S, CNC Training Officer, NTTF.

In an insightful conversation with Dr. Madhuri Dubey, Founder-Director of NSN, Mr. Avinash S, CNC Training Officer – Skill Development at Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF), shared valuable insights on his journey as a trainer. From his inspiration to pursue a career in training to his innovative methods for engaging learners, Mr. Avinash’s passion for skilling youth is truly inspiring. The discussion also focused on the memorable projects Mr. Avinash S has worked on, including the Tamil Nadu Tribal Welfare Project and CNC internships, and his strategies to motivate trainees. Watch the video to know more about his approach, the recognition he received as Best Trainer 2024, and his future aspirations at NTTF.

Here are some of the highlights from the interview. To watch the full video, please visit our YouTube channel.

Q. Please share your experience of receiving the Best Trainer Award from NTTF on its 65th anniversary.

A. The Best Trainer Award was given to me based on my training methods and how I conduct sessions. While I’m thankful and honored to receive this recognition, I believe this award is not just mine. It belongs to my entire department. The continuous motivation from my managers and the support from my head of department, who recommended me for this nomination, played a key role in this achievement. This is a team effort—my contribution was to prepare thoroughly and deliver my best.

Q. What inspired you to become a trainer, and how has your journey with NTTF been so far?

A. My inspiration to become a trainer began during my college days while studying mechanical engineering in Chennai. I frequently conducted seminars and helped my peers understand concepts, which sparked my interest in teaching. I even aspired to become a professor at that time.

After completing my engineering degree, I worked in the industry for 1.5 years before coming across an opportunity at NTTF. The role involved a one-year industrial training program, followed by a position as a training officer. This aligned perfectly with my passion, as it provided hands-on experience and mentorship from industry experts before transitioning into a teaching role.

Currently, as a training officer at NTTF, my biggest motivation comes from seeing students understand concepts and gain confidence in their skills.

Q. How do you conduct practical training and keep students motivated to learn and excel in their skills?

A. At NTTF, I follow a structured approach to ensure students grasp practical concepts effectively, especially those from diverse educational backgrounds. My training methodology is based on three key principles:

1. Visual learning with multimedia

Classroom presentations are enriched with GIFs, animations, and videos to enhance learning. Instead of relying solely on theoretical content, visually designed materials help students grasp concepts intuitively at a glance. This approach simplifies complex mechanical principles, making them more engaging and easier to understand.

2. Simulation-based training

Before handling actual equipment, students practice using simulation software. For example, when learning about measuring instruments, they first interact with a virtual version, gaining hands-on experience without the risk of damaging real tools. This step boosts confidence and enhances understanding in a controlled environment.

3. Hands-on practical experience

Following simulations, students transition to real-world applications. Having already visualized and practiced the process virtually, they approach machinery with confidence, ensuring a smoother shift to practical training.

This structured approach, starting from visual engagement, progressing to simulation, and culminating in hands-on practice ensures students develop a deep, practical understanding of their skills before stepping into real-world applications.

Skilling youth for a better future An NTTF Trainer's inspiring journey!

Q. Can you share a memorable experience from your training journey that stands out, whether at NTTF or from your previous experiences?

A. I had the opportunity to train students under welfare projects funded by the Tamil Nadu Government and Tamil Nadu Housing and Development Corporation. These CNC operator training programs primarily catered to students from tribal communities and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of them lacked confidence, had intense stage fear, and were hesitant to communicate.

The biggest challenge was transforming them within just three months to become industry-ready and secure placements. To build trust, I focused on fostering a supportive environment by  engaging in sports like badminton to encourage teamwork, and organizing outbound activities such as human chain building and communication exercises to enhance their soft skills.

These efforts led to a remarkable transformation in their personalities, boosting their confidence and teamwork abilities in an enjoyable and engaging way. Ultimately, all the students from this batch successfully secured CNC operator positions with competitive salaries, making it one of the most inspiring and rewarding experiences of my training journey.

Even after their placement, I remain in touch with the students. I always assure them that my support extends beyond the training period—it’s a lifelong relationship. As they enter the industry and encounter new technologies and machinery, they often reach out with questions, seeking clarity on various concepts. They message me asking, “What is this?” or “Why does this work this way?” This ongoing interaction reinforces the strong bond between a trainer and a trainee, fostering continuous learning and growth.

Q. What are your future career plans and aspirations for the coming years?

A. I am continuously working to improve my training methods by integrating emerging technologies into my presentations and enhancing hands-on learning experiences. Currently, I am designing and implementing advanced training modules in CNC and ZDNET automation technologies to better prepare trainees for future industry demands. While I have strong technical skills, I am also focusing on enhancing my soft skills to improve my engagement with students. Additionally, I aim to build stronger connections with industries to align our training with their expectations and create more opportunities for placements and internships. My ultimate goal is to mentor more trainees at NTTF, sharing my experiences and strategies to make a meaningful impact on their careers.

Q. Is there anything else you wish to add to all that you shared with us so far.

A. In today’s fast-evolving technological landscape, the role of a trainer in bridging the gap between traditional education and industry requirements is crucial. I am deeply committed to lifelong learning and continuous improvement, always open to feedback and eager to explore new training methods that make learning more impactful, engaging, and relevant for trainees.
