In an exciting development for the youth of India, the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme was recently launched on October 3, following its announcement by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Budget speech. This scheme is set to provide internship opportunities to one crore young individuals in the top 500 companies over the next five years, opening up an unprecedented path for career growth and skills development.

As students and fresh graduates, this initiative presents a golden opportunity to bridge the gap between your academic knowledge and real-world business experience. In today’s competitive job market, gaining practical experience through internships is essential for building a strong career foundation, and the PM Internship Scheme is designed to provide exactly that.

Key details about the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme

  • Enhances employability: The PM Internship Scheme focuses on improving the employability of Indian youth by offering hands-on exposure to real-world work environments.
  • Practical skill development: Whether you’re aiming for roles in large corporations or small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), this scheme will help you gain the practical skills and experience that employers seek.
  • Bridges the skill gap: The programme is a transformative opportunity to address the skills gap in India’s workforce, contributing to sustainable economic growth across the country.
  • Industry-ready training: With the direct involvement of top companies and structured learning, the scheme ensures that you are industry-ready by the end of your internship.
  • Financial support: Interns will receive a monthly stipend of ₹4,500 from the central government through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), with an additional ₹500 from the company’s CSR fund, making this both an educational and financially supportive opportunity.

Who is eligible for the PM Internship Scheme?

If you are between 21 and 24 years old and are currently not engaged in full-time employment, this internship programme is tailored for you. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • You must have passed Class 10 or higher.
  • Those from families with government jobs or a household income of ₹8 lakh or more in the financial year 2023-24 are not eligible.
  • The scheme is not open to post-graduates or individuals who have graduated from premier institutes such as IITs, IIMs, and IISER, or those with professional qualifications like CA or CMA.

This one-year internship programme is designed to give an edge to individuals who need practical work experience to launch their careers, offering an invaluable opportunity to build skills and establish a professional network.

How to apply?

Applying for the PM Internship Scheme is a straightforward process. The application process has been streamlined to ensure transparency and efficiency. Here is how to apply,

  • Starting October 12, candidates can visit the official portal: pminternship.mca.gov.in
  • On the portal, internship positions will be listed by companies.
  • The first batch will be open for applications until October 25.
  • You will need to share and self-certify your educational qualifications and residential details.
  • An Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool will match candidates’ data with companies’ needs and locations, generating a shortlist for companies to consider.
  • Once you’ve submitted your application, you can monitor the status of your application directly through the portal.

What’s the benefit of the scheme?

The most significant benefit of the PM Internship Scheme is the hands-on training and exposure it offers in a professional setting. You will gain invaluable experience, learning how companies operate, manage challenges, and grow in today’s dynamic business environment.

For companies, this scheme helps in creating a skilled pipeline of potential employees, ready to be absorbed into full-time roles. Interns not only benefit large corporations but also play an important role in enhancing productivity and innovation in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme is more than just an internship; it’s a stepping stone to a brighter career future. As students and young professionals, seizing this opportunity could significantly impact your employability and skill development. The structured internship will help you gain practical knowledge, expand your professional network, and position you for success in the ever-evolving job market.
