Product Design Engineering plays a vital role in creating innovative, user-centric and market-ready products. From consumer electronics and medical devices to automobiles and industrial equipment, organisations are looking for engineers who can combine creativity with technical expertise to design products that meet evolving customer and industry needs.

A Postgraduate Degree in Product Design Engineering helps engineering graduates develop expertise in design thinking, product development, engineering analysis and practical learning. It prepares them for careers in product design, engineering design and new product development across diverse industries.

Postgraduate Degree in Product Design Engineering from NTTF

The role of Product Design in modern engineering

Every successful product balance functionality, aesthetics, engineering performance and manufacturability. Product design is not only limited to creating concepts; but also involves understanding user needs, applying engineering principles and developing solutions that are ready for production.

Today’s product designers and engineers contribute to:

  • Transforming ideas into practical and manufacturable products
  • Developing innovative solutions that address user needs
  • Improving existing products through better design and engineering
  • Applying engineering principles to solve complex design challenges
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams throughout the design and development process

As organisations continue to focus on innovation and faster product development cycles, professionals with specialised design skills are becoming increasingly valuable across industries.

Why specialise in Product Design?

While an undergraduate engineering degree provides a strong technical foundation, designing successful products requires creativity, design thinking and specialised engineering expertise.

A postgraduate program helps graduates:

  • Build expertise in product design, engineering and innovation
  • Strengthen creativity, visualisation and problem-solving abilities
  • Learn industry-relevant design software and engineering tools
  • Gain practical exposure through projects and industry interactions
  • Expand career opportunities across product development, engineering design and R&D

For engineering graduates who enjoy innovation and creating products that solve real-world challenges, this specialisation offers an exciting and rewarding career path.

NTTF’s Postgraduate Degree in Product Design Engineering

NTTF (Nettur Technical Training Foundation) is recognised for its industry-oriented learning, technical expertise and strong emphasis on practical education. The Postgraduate Degree in Product Design Engineering (PGPDE) is offered at NTTF’s Peenya campus in Bengaluru. Designed for engineering graduates, the program encourages creativity, free-hand sketching and design thinking while providing advanced knowledge in product design, rendering techniques and 3D software.

Program overview

  • Duration: 2 years (4 semesters)
  • Commencement: September 2026
  • Eligibility:E./B.Tech. in Mechanical, Production, Industrial & Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Management, Automobile, Aeronautical, Mechatronics, Marine, Electronics, Electrical, Instrumentation, Bachelor of Architecture or equivalent
  • Selection Process: Based on academic performance and entrance examination
  • Age: No age restriction

What students learn

The curriculum combines creative thinking with technical knowledge to prepare students for every stage of the product design process.

Students explore subjects such as:

  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Engineering Drawing and 3D CAD
  • New Product Development
  • Elements of Design
  • Human Factors in Product Design
  • Design Management
  • Product Design
  • Systematic Innovation
  • CAE and Rapid Prototyping
  • Design for Manufacture & Assembly

The program also includes workshops, design projects and practical assignments that help students convert ideas into innovative and manufacturable products.

Learning beyond the classroom

The program combines classroom learning with industry exposure through industrial visits, expert talks, hands-on training and internships. During the final semester, students undertake an internship-based project in an industrial establishment, providing valuable workplace exposure and opportunities for future employment.

Students also gain hands-on experience with industry-relevant software such as Autodesk Alias, Creo Parametric, Fusion 360, ANSYS, Moldflow and VRED, strengthening their digital product design and engineering skills.

From concept to product

Students learn how to transform an idea into a functional, manufacturable product by applying design, engineering and analytical skills throughout the development process.

By the end of the program, students are equipped to:

  • Generate innovative product ideas and concepts
  • Create and review 3D product models
  • Evaluate designs for manufacturing and assembly
  • Develop prototypes and concept models
  • Apply engineering analysis to improve product performance
  • Understand product life cycle management and design project management systems

This combination of creativity, engineering analysis and practical exposure prepares graduates to contribute effectively to product innovation.

Career opportunities

Graduates can pursue careers across sectors such as automotive, consumer products, medical devices, industrial equipment, engineering design and manufacturing in roles including:

  • Product Design Engineer
  • Product Development Engineer
  • Design Engineer
  • CAD-CAE Engineer
  • Industrial Designer
  • Research and Development Engineer
