This week’s NSN Newsbytes highlights several updates, right from the expansion of digital education through SWAYAM and the establishment of AI laboratories in Karnataka to new vocational training centres, apprenticeship-linked degree programmes, and emerging sector-focused skilling initiatives; stakeholders across the country are strengthening workforce readiness for the future. 

Industry leaders, educational institutions, and government agencies are increasingly collaborating to bridge skill gaps, enhance employability, and create opportunities in high-growth sectors such as artificial intelligence, fintech, healthcare, renewable energy, hospitality, and space technology. 

At the same time, CSR-led interventions are expanding access to livelihood opportunities, digital learning, and entrepreneurship support for underserved communities.

India – Australia Toolkit to Strengthen Applied Learning in Secondary Schools

A new Toolkit developed by the Australia India Institute and partner institutions will help Indian secondary schools integrate applied learning into mainstream education. Aligned with NEP 2020, it offers practical resources for curriculum design, pedagogy, assessment, and industry partnerships, thereby strengthening India-Australia education collaboration. Highlights from this week’s Newsbytes 

  • India expanded digital education and skilling initiatives, covering 1.49 lakh schools, offering 18,580+ SWAYAM courses, and strengthening innovation, vocational training, and workforce readiness for Viksit Bharat 2047. 
  • Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran urged youth to prioritise AI-proof trade and human-centric skills over degrees, highlighting future employability and workforce readiness.
  • ITI rankings improved in 2026 – 27, with 466 institutes scoring above 9 out of 10, reflecting enhanced quality, performance, and training outcomes. 
  • The MSME Ministry laid the foundation stone for a Technology Centre in Gaya, Bihar, expected to train 7,000 youth and strengthen MSME-led skill development.

National skill development updates

  • ITDC is exploring hospitality skill development and community-based tourism initiatives in Mizoram to enhance livelihoods, employment opportunities, and tourism-led economic growth. 
  • India and Australia highlighted collaboration in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and workforce development, strengthening clean energy partnerships and future-ready skill ecosystems. 
  • NCVET recognised IN-SPACe as an awarding body, enabling accredited space-sector training and certification in satellite technology, mission design, and advanced aerospace skills.

State initiatives driving skilling and innovation

  • Karnataka approved 50 AI laboratories in government colleges to provide hands-on training in AI, machine learning, and data science, enhancing student employability. 
  • Telangana Prisons Department proposed an ITI at Cherlapalli Central Prison to provide inmates with vocational skills, enhance employability, and support social reintegration.
  • The Skill Development Department of Arunachal Pradesh launched a finishing course for ITI trainees, covering employability skills, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and career readiness.  
  • A new RSETI training centre was inaugurated in Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, to provide free vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and bank linkage assistance for rural youth. 
  • Haryana is considering sugar industry-focused courses in ITIs to develop sector-specific skills, improve employability, and meet workforce demand across sugar mills. 
  • Atal Residential Schools (Uttar Pradesh) will introduce free skill development training for 3,447 students, integrating vocational education with academics to enhance employability and self-reliance. 
  • AMTZ (Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone) received NCVET recognition as an Awarding Body, enabling structured skill development, certification, and workforce training for India’s medical technology sector. 
  • Meghalaya partnered with Singapore’s ITEES to strengthen vocational education, develop the proposed Meghalaya Skills Institute, and align skill training with global standards. 
  • UPSDM and NSE signed an MoU to provide financial skills training to over 1.5 lakh youth, integrating financial literacy with vocational skilling and employability. 
  • APSCHE plans to introduce apprenticeship-linked degree programmes that integrate academic learning with industry training to enhance employability and produce job-ready graduates. 

Industry partnerships and workforce readiness

  • IBA Bangalore and BFSI-SSC launched a two-year PGDM in BFSI and FinTech, integrating NSDC certifications and industry-aligned skills for future finance professionals. 
  • ASSOCHAM J&K and DTNBWED discussed collaborative initiatives in skill development, workforce education, entrepreneurship, and industry-focused training to boost employability in Jammu & Kashmir. 
  • Hindustan Copper, in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, inaugurated a SATHEE KENDRA at Malanjkhand to enhance educational access and academic support for students. 
  • Oracle and UPSDM will train 300,000 students and professionals in AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data science by 2029 to enhance their employability. 
  • SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant provided vocational training to over 1,200 engineering students, strengthening industry-academia collaboration and enhancing practical engineering skills. 
  • Diageo India launched a hospitality skill centre in Goa under its Learning for Life initiative, aiming to train 200 youth annually and improve employability.
  • Samsung is expanding employee access to generative AI tools and launching large-scale AI upskilling initiatives to strengthen workforce capabilities and productivity.  
  • TeamLease EdTech is bridging the education-employment gap through industry-aligned online learning, apprenticeships, internships, and upskilling programmes to enhance graduate employability. 
  • EHL is expanding its India presence through vocational hospitality diplomas, executive education programmes, and industry partnerships, strengthening hospitality skilling and workforce development. 

CSR initiatives in skills and livelihoods

  • MGL inaugurated a CSR-supported skill development centre in Latur, offering free vocational training in plumbing, mobile repair, data entry, and business services. 
  • Enphase Energy’s CSR initiative trained 50 underprivileged Telangana youth in solar PV operations and employability skills, achieving over 70% placement and self-employment outcomes. 
  • Mizoram launched the ‘CSR Connect’ portal to link corporates with development projects, enhancing CSR investments, transparency, and collaboration for sustainable socio-economic growth. 
  • Creative Galileo supported over 1,600 Anganwadis in Maharashtra’s Wardha district with smart learning kits, digital resources, and teacher training to strengthen foundational education. 
  • LinkedIn India extended a ₹1.5 crore grant to support 25,000 Karnataka students with mentorship, AI-readiness training, and employability-focused career guidance programmes. 
  • Bijliride partnered with Telangana Police and the Transport Department to support Stree Ride, providing women with EV training, employment opportunities, and platform onboarding.
  • Nasscom Foundation’s ATAIN initiative is equipping Delhi-NCR youth with emerging technology and employability skills, strengthening career readiness and access to future job opportunities. 

Higher education, technology and digital skills 

  • QCI and FDDI signed an MoU to strengthen skilling, certification, testing, and quality infrastructure across India’s leather and footwear sector value chain. 
  • Anna University and Bajaj Auto Foundation partnered to establish a ₹15 crore Engineering Skills Training Centre, strengthening industry-academia collaboration and manufacturing workforce readiness. 
  • Allcargo Group’s Avashya Foundation and YCMOU partnered to strengthen skill development, industry-aligned training, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for underserved youth. 
  • IIT Mandi and NSDC’s HIMSHIKHAR 2026 programme is training 600+ students in AI, data science, software development, and entrepreneurship through immersive residential learning. 
  • Parul University launched the Lakshya 2047 Centre for Future Skills to train students in emerging technologies through industry partnerships and global certifications.
