This week’s NSN Newsbytes highlight India’s fast-evolving skilling ecosystem, driven by policy reforms, global partnerships, industry-led training, and large-scale investments in workforce readiness. 

Key developments include the World Bank’s $830 million support for ITI modernisation, expansion of AI and digital skilling initiatives, and growing emphasis on early vocational education as outlined in the Economic Survey 2025-26. Government programmes under Skill India, PM-SETU, SOAR, and Viksit Bharat 2047 are being strengthened through industry collaboration, gender-responsive skilling, apprenticeships, and technology-enabled training. 

States such as Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir are implementing targeted reforms to boost employability, entrepreneurship, and career guidance. Industry and CSR initiatives from Apple, SAP, Samsung, Google.org, Hindalco and Reliance Foundation are scaling AI, logistics, infrastructure, manufacturing, and digital skills. Together, these updates showcase how India is aligning education, skills and employment to build a future-ready, globally competitive workforce.

Highlights from this week’s Newsbytes – 

  • Hindalco, with KADA, launched a multi-skills training centre at Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated by CM Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, to boost placement-linked, industry-ready skilling for youth.
  • Apple is expanding skill-development programmes across 25+ supplier facilities in India, starting with Tata Electronics, and launching a Bengaluru education hub with MAHE from March. Read more…
  • The World Bank approved an $830 million loan to modernise India’s ITI network, addressing skill mismatches, low placement rates, and strengthening youth employability for Viksit Bharat goals.
  • The two-day National Consultation on Vocationalisation of Education under Samagra Shiksha was inaugurated on 5 February 2026 at PSSCIVE-NCERT, Bhopal. Education leaders and policymakers deliberated on NEP 2020-aligned vocational education, emphasising experiential learning, industry linkages, early skill exposure, career guidance, and capacity building to enhance employability and reduce dropouts.

Government initiatives in skill development and education

  • NHAI will launch a structured skilling programme for highway construction and maintenance workers to improve quality standards and build a trained workforce for long-term infrastructure upkeep.
  • MSDE signed an MoU with IPE Global to strengthen gender-responsive skilling, boost women’s participation in aspirational jobs, and advance inclusive, future-ready workforce development across India.
  • The Economic Survey 2025-26 recommended integrating vocational education from Classes VI-XII, including industry exposure, to boost career awareness and reduce school dropouts.
  • India’s logistics sector will require 47 lakh skilled workers by 2030, prompting calls for urgent skilling reforms and a digitally trained workforce to meet demand.
  • Union Budget proposals include supporting ICAI and ICSI to offer short-term modular courses, boosting employability as part of a six-step growth plan spanning manufacturing, MSMEs, and infrastructure.
  • The 45th NSQC meeting reviewed 80 NSQF-aligned qualifications from 15 awarding bodies, strengthening quality, relevance and industry alignment of vocational education nationwide.
  • The NSQC approved multiple AI-focused qualifications under the SOAR initiative and ratified IndiaSkills and WorldSkills qualifications, strengthening India’s preparation for an AI-driven economy.

State-led skilling, innovation and reforms

  • Jharkhand government is set to partner with Jindal Foundation on skilling and research, focusing on capacity building, centres of excellence, scholarships and public policy research.
  • Uttar Pradesh will develop the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Employment and Industrial Zone as an integrated hub for skilling, employment and entrepreneurship, linking industrial growth with job creation statewide.
  • Odisha has announced a ₹500 crore Utkarsh ITI Yojana to upgrade five government ITIs into advanced centres with modern infrastructure and industry-aligned training.
  • The MSME Development Office, Jammu, organised an Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme at ITI Rajouri, guiding youth on self-employment opportunities, MSME schemes, financing and enterprise setup.
  • UP Skill Development Mission made daily newspaper reading mandatory across 800+ training centres to strengthen soft skills, current affairs awareness, communication, and analytical thinking among trainees.
  • The Jammu and Kashmir government announced a hike in honorarium for Vocational Trainers under Samagra Shiksha and PM SHRI, effective April 2024, strengthening support for vocational education.
  • An awareness and mobilisation drive on PM-NAPS was held at ITI West Kameng, encouraging trainees and unemployed youth to utilise apprenticeship schemes for improved employability.
  • Tripura CM Manik Saha highlighted education- and sports-led development, inaugurating new school buildings and announcing ₹80 crore investments to strengthen inclusive growth and human capital across the state.
  • Rajasthan’s School Education Department will develop a three-year roadmap to strengthen structured, continuous career guidance, helping students make informed choices aligned with emerging career opportunities.

Industry-Led collaborations driving workforce readiness

  • A Logistics Sector Skill Council budget poll urged a 40% increase in AI skilling investment to boost employment and build a future-ready, globally competitive workforce.
  • Google.org pledged ₹85 crore to Wadhwani AI to integrate adaptive learning into platforms like SWAYAM, aiming to benefit 75 million students and 1.8 million educators by 2027.
  • FICCI hosted the Central India EdSkills Summit 2026 in Bhopal, spotlighting application-oriented learning, apprenticeships and ITI modernisation to build a future-ready workforce.
  • Apple is expanding skill-development programmes across 25+ supplier facilities in India, starting with Tata Electronics, and launching a Bengaluru education hub with MAHE from March.
  • SAP expanded its global learning ecosystem to deliver AI-ready, instructor-led training at scale, supporting its goal to equip 12 million people with future enterprise skills by 2030.
  • Samsung certified 2,000 students in Bengaluru under its Samsung Innovation Campus programme, strengthening Karnataka’s future-ready talent pool through advanced digital and technology skilling.
  • Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan University, Perambalur, signed an MoU with NASSCOM FutureSkills to deliver industry-aligned digital and emerging technology skilling for engineering students.

CSR initiatives in skilling and education

  • At the 21st Century Skills Conclave, Reliance Foundation highlighted its skilling impact, reaching 12 lakh people, while leaders stressed future-ready skills and industry collaboration.

Higher Education and Workforce Skilling

  • IIM Kashipur signed an MoU with ICAI to strengthen academic-professional collaboration and enhance the skills and competencies of Chartered Accountants through joint initiatives.
  • IN-SPACe partnered with Bennett University’s Times School of Media to launch a short-term course on space sector communication, public engagement, and media skills aligned with industry needs.
  • Apple has launched its first India Education Hub in Bengaluru to train supply-chain workers in coding, automation and digital skills, partnering with Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
