India’s skilling and education ecosystem is entering a decisive phase, marked by leadership transitions, policy innovation, and large-scale adoption of future-facing skills. This week’s Newsbytes highlight how India is aligning workforce preparation with emerging realities like AI – artificial intelligence, digital inclusion, Industry 4.0, and inclusive growth, while strengthening institutions across school, higher education, vocational training, and community skilling.

At the national level, initiatives such as the nationwide adult skill survey planned for 2026, the rapid scale-up of the SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness) programme, signal a sharper focus on data-driven, outcome-oriented skilling. The integration of sports, fitness, AI literacy, and technology-enabled learning reflects a broader redefinition of employability beyond traditional credentials.

States are reinforcing this momentum through AI policies, inclusive education infrastructure, digital literacy programmes, and large-scale skill competitions. Industry, academia, and CSR partners are playing a critical role by launching apprenticeships, AI training, advanced labs, and women-focused technical programmes.

Together, these updates underscore India’s coordinated push to convert its demographic advantage into a globally competitive, AI-confident, and inclusive talent ecosystem.

EOI | Empanelment of NSQF Training Partners – Uttarakhand

NIELIT Haridwar invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from eligible institutes for empanelment as NSQF Training Partners across all districts of Uttarakhand. Applications must be submitted by 15 January 2026. To apply and to download the guidelines: Click here! 

EOI | NSQF Training and Candidate Mobilisation – West Bengal

NIELIT Kolkata invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from NIELIT-accredited institutes to provide NSQF training, candidate mobilisation, and required infrastructure for MeitY-sponsored programmes covering SC/ST and GEN-EWS candidates across five districts of West Bengal. Interested institutes are advised to review the detailed EOI guidelines and submission format before applying. Last date for submission: 25 January 2026 (by 6:00 PM). Tender | Assessment of Performance – ITI and Polytechnic Candidates (Odisha)

DTE&T, Odisha invites sealed proposals from eligible bidders to undertake the Assessment of Performance of ITI and Polytechnic candidates under DTE&T, Odisha. Interested bidders can access the detailed tender notice, eligibility criteria, scope of work, and bid timelines on the official website. Last date for bid submission: 21 January 2026 (by 2:00 PM).

  • NSDC appointed Mr. Arunkumar Pillai as Chief Executive Officer, strengthening leadership to scale outcome-driven skilling and advance India’s global, industry-linked skills ecosystem.
  • India accelerated its SOAR Skilling for AI Readiness initiative, enrolling 1.59 lakh learners and embedding AI literacy across education to build a globally competitive, AI-ready workforce.
  • Union Minister Shri Jayant Chaudhary inaugurated a new girls’ hostel at NSTI (Women) Panipat, expanding safe residential capacity and strengthening women’s access to quality technical skilling.
  • Samsung partnered with the University of Madras to launch the Samsung Innovation Campus in Tamil Nadu, training youth in AI, IoT, Big Data, and coding for future-ready careers.

Government initiatives – Policy innovations and strategic launches in skill development

  • India will conduct a nationwide adult skill survey in 2026 to assess basic, intermediate, and advanced competencies, guiding evidence-based skilling and workforce policy reforms.
  • Ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, a Yale study found no major AI-driven job disruption, highlighting global shifts toward AI-enabled work and reskilling.
  • President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated IGNOU’s Regional and Skill Centres in Rairangpur, expanding access to higher education and vocational training in underserved regions aligned with NEP 2020.
  • India’s literacy reached 80.9%, but wide state-level gaps persist; NITI Aayog’s SEQI highlights disparities in learning outcomes, access, equity, and governance across states.
  • India plans to integrate sports, fitness, yoga, and self-defence into skill training institutes, boosting trainees’ physical resilience and enabling additional income opportunities alongside vocational skills.
  • Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal announced six advanced skill development centres across Uttar Mumbai constituencies, with the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Kaushalya Vikas Kendra already operational in Kandivali East.
  • Union Minister Shri Jayant Chaudhary completed the SOAR “AI to be Aware” module, urging India’s workforce to be AI-confident and nominating leaders to spread nationwide AI readiness.
  • I-GYAN.AI Solutions launched a nationwide, NEP 2020-aligned AI platform to support teachers, personalise learning, and modernise academic and administrative processes with a human-first approach.
  • The Indian Army launched an 11-day eco-tourism exposure tour for Arunachal Pradesh college students, promoting youth empowerment, sustainable development, and livelihood opportunities in border regions.
  • KVK Bandipora, with the MSME Ministry, launched a seven-day livestock-based entrepreneurship programme to equip rural youth and women with skills for self-employment and income generation.
  • A ₹20 crore Skill Hub and Incubation Centre will be set up in Kakinada to promote youth skilling, entrepreneurship, and job creation across the Godavari districts.
  • India accelerated its SOAR Skilling for AI Readiness initiative, enrolling 1.59 lakh learners and embedding AI literacy across education to build a globally competitive, AI-ready workforce.

State-led skilling and institutional reforms

  • DIET Garacharma launched a 30-day basic computer training under Samagra Shiksha to promote digital literacy and vocational skills among local community members.
  • Rajasthan launched its AI-ML Policy 2026 and National AI Literacy Programme to integrate AI into governance, skills development, and public service delivery.
  • Tamil Nadu Deputy CM Shri Udhayanidhi Stalin felicitated winners of the State Skill Competition 2025, highlighting 1,200 student placements and plans for 100+ job fairs to boost employability.
  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu laid the foundation for the state’s first Centre of Excellence for Divyangjan education, reinforcing inclusive development and empowerment.

Industry-Led collaborations driving workforce readiness

  • THDC India Limited invited applications for ITI Trade Apprenticeship Training 2026, offering one-year hands-on technical training at its Tehri and Koteshwar units.
  • IBM announced plans to skill five million learners in India by 2030 in AI, cybersecurity, and quantum computing through partnerships with academic and skilling institutions.
  • Apparel Made-Ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC) unveiled its 2026 roadmap to modernise India’s garment sector, prioritising AI, Industry 4.0 skills, MSME clusters, and new Centres of Excellence for globally competitive apparel training.
  • At LSSC’s 36th Governing Council Meeting, Sanjay Leekha of Alpine Apparels assumed charge as Chairman, succeeding Mukhtarul Amin.
  • Shri Naveen Jindal, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Kurukshetra) and Chairman of Jindal Steel, inaugurated advanced Learning Model Labs at the Naveen Jindal Skill Centre, Angul, reinforcing industry-aligned training, safety, and technical excellence for a future-ready workforce.

CSR initiatives in skilling and education

  • SASTRA University partnered with Greaves Cotton to launch a two-year Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing for women under the company’s CSR initiative, promoting inclusive technical skilling.

AI, Innovation, and the Future of Academic Skilling

  • Young India Skills University trained over 1,000 students in skill-based programmes and plans to launch degree and postgraduate courses from the 2026 – 27 academic year.
  • Vijay Engineering College, Khammam, signed MoUs with Knowvation, My Spark Academy, and Speed Labs to launch a 50-day Generative AI training programme, enhancing student employability.
  • Anantha Lakshmi Institute of Technology & Sciences (ALITS), Anantapur, renewed its MoU with Atal Incubation Centre–SKU for a second year, strengthening innovation, entrepreneurship, and startup culture among students and faculty.
  • Banaras Hindu University launched 121 credit-ready online courses under SWAYAM for the January-April 2026 session, covering science, engineering, management, law, and interdisciplinary fields.
