In a significant step towards nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship among vocational learners, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), through its Directorate General of Training (DGT), has collaborated with the Aditya Birla Capital Foundation (ABCF) and Pilani Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Society (PIEDS); the incubator of BITS Pilani; to launch a first-of-its-kind national innovation challenge for NSTI students across India.

A platform to transform skills into startups

The initiative, titled “Navonmesh Protsahan Spardha: Kaushalta se Udyamita,” aims to inspire students from National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) to convert their technical skills and innovative ideas into scalable business ventures.

Currently, India has 33 operational NSTIs, training over 10,000 students under the Craft Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) and Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). The launch of this challenge creates new avenues for these students to apply their skills beyond traditional employment, enabling them to become innovators and job creators.

Innovation Challenge Launched for NSTI Students by MSDE, ABCF, and BITS Pilani

Bridging the innovation gap in TVET

While schools and higher education institutions have established frameworks to support student innovations, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) ecosystem; with over 13 lakh students enrolled in ITIs and NSTIs; has had limited opportunities for structured entrepreneurial support.

This challenge directly addresses that gap by providing a platform that includes:

  • Mentorship from industry and academic experts
  • Access to incubation and resources through BITS Pilani’s PIEDS
  • Recognition and prizes for outstanding ideas
  • Support for commercialization and market readiness

Focus areas for innovation

The innovation challenge will focus on key industry sectors where skill-based entrepreneurship can make the strongest impact:

  • IT/ITeS
  • Automotive
  • Apparel
  • Electronics and Hardware
  • Power, Capital Goods, and Manufacturing

By empowering NSTI students in these domains, the initiative seeks to create a robust pipeline of skilled innovators who can contribute to India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Speaking at the launch event, Ms. Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, MSDE, emphasized the ministry’s vision of enabling skilled individuals to become job creators.

“At the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, we believe that every skilled individual carries within them the potential to become a job creator. Through this partnership with the Aditya Birla Capital Foundation, we are enabling NSTI students to channel their technical skills into innovation and enterprise. The Navonmesh Protsahan Spardha will empower our young innovators to transform ideas into sustainable ventures, strengthening India’s vision of becoming an Aatmanirbhar and innovation-driven nation.”

Driving an innovation-ready workforce

The Navonmesh Protsahan Spardha is more than an innovation competition; it is an ecosystem initiative. By combining MSDE’s skill development reach, ABCF’s CSR leadership, and BITS Pilani’s incubation expertise, the program is expected to:

  • Foster a culture of innovation within NSTIs
  • Encourage entrepreneurship as a viable career path
  • Promote inclusive growth by engaging both men’s and women’s NSTIs
  • Align vocational training with real-world problem solving

Towards a self-reliant, innovation-driven India

As India continues to strengthen its skill development framework, initiatives like this mark a critical evolution; where skill training meets innovation, and technical expertise leads to entrepreneurship.

With mentorship, incubation, and corporate support converging, NSTI students now have a national platform to ideate, innovate, and ignite change; transforming vocational training into a launchpad for sustainable, skill-based startups.
