As the world transitions to cleaner energy alternatives, India is taking significant strides in the development of green hydrogen, a key player in the future of sustainable energy. With the government actively shaping policies and implementing initiatives to bolster green hydrogen production, India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) is at the forefront of this movement. The mission is designed to establish India as a global hub for green hydrogen production and usage, paving the way for energy security, reduced carbon emissions, and enhanced industrial applications. Apart from the mission, government has announced various other resources and policies for the sector. In this article, let’s dive deeper into the recent advancements in the green hydrogen sector and know more about the government skill development resources and training initiatives.

Recent advancements in the green hydrogen sector

The National Green Hydrogen Mission lays out a comprehensive strategy to drive the growth of the green hydrogen sector. More importantly, it places a strong emphasis on skill development to ensure a steady supply of proficient professionals across various segments, including renewable energy integration, hydrogen production, storage, and distribution.

Recently, as part of the mission’s ongoing developments, the 2nd Project Appraisal Committee (PAC) meeting was held at Kaushal Bhawan, chaired by Ms. Sonal Mishra, Joint Secretary, MSDE. During this meeting, key stakeholders came together to share updates on mission implementation. As a result, the discussions generated actionable insights that will further accelerate the mission’s objectives. Ultimately, these efforts will contribute to tangible progress in building a robust green hydrogen ecosystem in India.

To actualize the mission’s objectives, the Indian government has also committed substantial resources:

  • Budget Allocation: An investment of nearly ₹20,000 crore has been earmarked for the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with ₹400 crore allocated up to 2025-26 for the development of Green Hydrogen Hubs and other projects.
  • Workforce Training: Plans are underway to train approximately 600,000 individuals over the next six years, equipping them with the necessary skills to support the burgeoning green hydrogen industry. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and MNRE, aiming to address the demand for skilled workers across the entire green hydrogen value chain by 2030.

Government resources and training initiatives for green hydrogen

Recognizing the need for skilled professionals in this emerging field, the Indian government has introduced various programs to support workforce development and infrastructure expansion:

Skill Training in Green Hydrogen under PMKVY 4.0

Under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0, specialized training programs in green hydrogen production, storage, and safety protocols have been launched. This initiative aims to equip individuals with the necessary expertise to support India’s clean energy transition. By integrating renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, the program ensures that the country builds a competent workforce for future hydrogen plants, fuel cell technology, and environmental safety roles.

National Green Hydrogen Mission Portal

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a dedicated National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) portal to provide comprehensive information on India’s green hydrogen roadmap. The portal offers insights into government policies, funding opportunities, and upcoming projects, acting as a resource hub for stakeholders. (Visit: nghm.mnre.gov.in)

Hydrogen Resource Database

The Hydrogen Resources Section on the NGHM portal provides crucial information regarding green hydrogen-related projects, funding mechanisms, and industrial collaborations. These resources serve as a guideline for businesses and investors looking to participate in the growing hydrogen economy. (Access: Hydrogen Resources)

Positioning India as a global leader in green hydrogen

The government’s strategic focus on green hydrogen aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. With continued investments in research, production infrastructure, and policy frameworks, India aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and become a major exporter of green hydrogen. Collaborations with global energy leaders and advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology will further accelerate this transition.

With the National Green Hydrogen Mission gaining momentum, India is well-positioned to emerge as a key player in the green hydrogen sector. Government-backed skill training programs, policy reforms, and digital resources are ensuring that the nation not only produces but also utilizes green hydrogen efficiently. As industries and businesses embrace this clean energy source, India’s efforts in green hydrogen will play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable, low-carbon future.
