Indian Institute of Skills Mumbai launched to equip youth for Industry 4.0

The Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 9th October 2024, a significant step in advancing the employability of India’s youth for national and global opportunities. This is a part of a broader initiative involving development projects worth over Rs 7600 crore, IIS Mumbai aims to create a workforce equipped with advanced skills for Industry 4.0.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the confidence of today’s youth is shaping India’s future, positioning the nation as a global hub for skilled talent. Also underscored the government’s focus on aligning Indian skills with international standards, thus opening avenues for global employment and development.

Established through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Tata IIS (a Section 8 company under Tata Trusts), the institute will play a pivotal role in realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of making India the ‘Skill Capital of the World.’

Focus areas of Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) Mumbai

The institute will focus on hands-on training in key areas such as:

  • Factory automation
  • Digital manufacturing
  • Mechatronics
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Data analytics
  • Additive manufacturing, addressing both the manufacturing and services sectors

Indian Institute of Skills Mumbai launched to equip youth for Industry 4.0

Situated within the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) campus in Chunabhatti, Mumbai, IIS spans four acres and is designed to provide advanced training across various sectors.

Specialized courses offered by IIS Mumbai

The institute’s state-of-the-art facilities will initially offer six specialized courses, including:

  • Advanced industrial automation and robotics
  • Industrial automation fundamentals
  • Advanced ARC welding techniques
  • Additive manufacturing
  • Electric vehicle battery specialization
  • 2 and 3 wheeler EV technician

Hostel facilities are also planned to enhance the learning experience for students.

Industry collaboration for practical learning

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for the Ministry of Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, highlighted the strategic importance of the institute, saying, “By equipping our youth with cutting-edge expertise, IIS is positioning them to not only excel within India but also to compete and thrive in global markets.”

Shri Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Minister for Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, Government of Maharashtra, further emphasized the significance of the collaboration with Tata Group, noting the institute’s role in upskilling and enhancing opportunities for Indian youth.

The institute’s advanced laboratories have been developed in partnership with over 15 global and Indian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), ensuring students receive practical, hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment. Graduates will be well-prepared for employment in emerging fields like electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and robotics.

Short-term training programs offered by IIS Mumbai

In addition to its core courses, IIS will offer short-term training programs in collaboration with industry leaders, such as:

  • Industrial robotics with Fanuc India
  • Industrial automation with SMC India
  • Culinary and core housekeeping with Taj Skyline

Shri Venu Srinivasan, Chairman of Tata IIS, remarked, “The Indian Institute of Skills, Mumbai, is a symbol of Tata Group’s commitment to empowering the youth with future-ready skills. This initiative will help young Indians lead independent lives while driving national economic growth.”

The event marked a milestone moment in India’s skill development journey, paving the way for a future-ready workforce capable of thriving in a rapidly evolving global economy.
