Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Union Minister of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, has launched the ‘SWAYAM Plus’ platform on February 27, 2024. This innovative platform, developed collaboratively with industry leaders like L&T, Microsoft, CISCO, etc., aims to provide employability and professional development-focused programs.

The SWAYAM Plus platform is operated by the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), catering to a vast number of learners. With an enrollment base that has surged from 31 lakh in 2017 to over 72 lakh by the end of 2023, SWAYAM stands as a popular e-learning platform in India.

Key features of SWAYAM Plus include multilingual content, an AI-enabled chatbot for personalized course selection, and credit recognition for courses offered by industry players, providing academic flexibility.

MoE launches SWAYAM Plus platform to provide employability and professional development-focused programs

SWAYAM Plus is set to enhance the employability of both college students and lifelong learners by offering programs in sectors such as,

  • Banking, Finance Services and Insurance
  • Digital and Emerging Technologies
  • Engineering
  • Healthcare
  • Indian Knowledge Systems
  • Information Technology and Services
  • Media, Communication and Soft Skills
  • Supply Chain and Logistics
  • Others

These courses are designed to equip learners with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills demanded by the job market, making them more job-ready and competitive in their respective fields.

During the launch event, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted how SWAYAM Plus aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, providing a platform for individuals to pursue education at their own pace and balance work and studies effectively. This initiative aims to make education industry-fit, empowering learners to upskill and reskill, thereby contributing to India’s knowledge economy.

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the growing demand for trained manpower across various sectors and how SWAYAM Plus serves as a solution to meet this demand by offering relevant courses.

Additionally, Prof. R. Sarathi, Dean (Planning) and Faculty, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, highlighted the importance of this initiative in bridging the gap between academia and industry, offering internship opportunities and credit recognition for skill-based courses.
