The mid-summer scene in the skill space has turned really hot with many initiatives, MoUs and announcements. While the action in Odisha Skill Development Authority is all set to begin under the leadership of Mr. Subroto Bagchi, other states are not far behind. At the district level, skill development centers are much awaited in Coimbatore foundry industry and sports industry in Jalandhar. And, MSME website will soon publish skill gap analysis of 600 districts. Read on from skill development news digest 300416.

  • Andhra Pradesh: GAIL contributes Rs 10 crores for skill development in AP to enhance the employability of youth through vocational training for 2,000 candidates in various specialized jobs in the oil and gas sector.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: Skill development classes conducted at Rajiv Gandhi Govt. Polytechnic, Itanagar under AICTE-NEQIP scheme.
  • Himachal Pradesh: The chief minister announces plans for training 50 thousand rural youth in Himachal while laying the foundation of CIPET at Baddi near Solan,
  • Jammu and Kashmir: 1.The chief minister seeks the support of CII in skill development of youth. 2. Army, Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) and J&K Bank hold skill development programmes
  • Karnataka: SKF India opens second vocational skill development center for underprivileged youth in Bangalore. It will train more than 5000 youth in the next five years.
  • Kerala: Prisoners are equipped with vocational training in computer training cooking, plumbing so that it is easy to find work after their release.
  • Maharashtra: 1. The government perceives the need for cluster projects to provide skill development and to make industries globally competitive. 2. India’s first university for artisans ‘Karigars’ to come up at Wardha, Maharashtra
  • Manipur: The first ever skill developments institute to be set up at the Imphal College.
  • Mizoram: 1.Government emphasizes on skill development as the immediate need to train youth. 2.The Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Ministry will invest Rs 33,000 crores for skill development of the north-eastern states during the present fiscal.
  • Odisha: The government will set up eight Advanced Skill Development Training Institutes to train 2 lakh youths within five years in 142 disciplines and 12 industry sectors
  • Punjab: 1.The AICTE has launched PMKVY in technical institutes to impart skill-based training to students after college hours 2. Government plans to start 200 skill development centers 3. Finolex industries partners with ITI Patiala to improve plumbing and sanitation courses.
  • Rajasthan: The government has signed an MoU worth Rs 200 crores with Bhartiya Skill Development Campus (BSDC) to set up the first skill development university. This will provide skill training in 247 subjects to interested students.
  • Tamil Nadu: The Slum Clearance Board will impart skill development training for unemployed youth in Chennai and other towns. 2. Apparel Training & Design Centre (ATDC) Tamil Nadu centres have trained 30, 000 plus candidates in last 5 years leading to 27% of total employment in textile industry.
  • Uttar Pradesh: ITI in Meerut hosts first convocation ceremony and appoints four alumni as brand ambassadors for vocational education.

The industry sectors

  • Plastic process industry needs 10 lakh skilled workforce by the year 2023-24 according to S Sugumar, the principal director CIPET.
  • In order to uplift the handloom industry, the government is working out strategies, which include increasing wages of skilled weavers to Rs 500 per day.
  • The Health Care Skill Council and National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare (NABH) sign a pact of skill development through training, assessment and certification.
  • The Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) signed a 5-year MoU to develop and facilitate wellness programs and training workshops for Healthcare professionals across India.
  • KPMG will collaborate with Aerospace and Aviation Sector Skill Council (AASSC) to develop occupational map for the aerospace and aviation sector.
  • NIIT to train 20,000 students in technologies with high job prospects to keep pace with changing requirements in the IT industry.
  • National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) emphasizes on skill development as a critical requirement to bring in blue revolution.
  • Niesbud organizes certificate programme in export-import and agri-business.
  • To address skill gaps in IT industry, NASSCOM and Symantec will launch courses in cyber security and they have developed qualification packs (QPs) in consultation with organizations in IT/ITeS and financial services.

The central government

  • Skill development budget gets reduced as MSDE receives one fourth of the proposed amount.
  • Government proposes to integrate education and skills through open learning from National Open School.
  • Retiring IAF personnel get skill development certificates: The defence ministry had signed an MoU with MSDE to train the retiring defence personnel so that they could easily get civilian jobs post-service.
  • Cabinet approves skill development MoU with Wadhwani Operating Foundation, a US-based NGO for contributions up to $40 Million.
