Here’s our news digest for the last fortnight covering the news and happenings from various states in India. We have compiled headlines from various sources to help you learn, understand and engage with various developments in the skills, vocational training and employability space. Andhra Pradesh: 1. APSSDC Project managing director, B Nageswara Rao emphasized the need to develop skills from school-level for better employability in an event at Vignan University at Vadlamudi. 2. District Rural Development Agencies (DRDA) is in the process of establishing 14 Skill Development and Training Centres across Anantapur district to skill women and youth.

Assam: 1.Northeast India gets first Centre of Excellence in Electronics Sector Skill Development as Electronics Sector Skill Council of India (ESSCI) signed an MoU with Assam Don Bosco University, Guwahati 2. Chanu Creations has provided 300 Hours of Skill Development Training on Two Shaft Handloom Weaver at Kaki Tangiya, Nagaon District of Assam under NSFDC SDTP for the year 2017-18. 3.Assam Chief Minister has launched Skill Development Training Centres across the state carrying forward the PM’s Skill India mission. 4.Dabur started a vocational training centre, at Dhekidol Village in Sonitpur district, which will start conduct a six-month course on stitching and tailoring for women 5.Short-term skill development training on electricians was conducted at the Central jail for the inmates in Jorhat.

Bihar: State government will set up an apparel and textiles park at Bihta near Patna in an area of more than 100 acres.

  • NSDC, in concurrence with MSDE, withdraws powers of Security Sector Skill Development Council (SSSDC) as an assessment and certification body. These powers are now transferred to Management, Entrepreneurship and Professional Skills Council (MEPSC).
  • MSDE and NSDC to conduct a 4- month survey to take stock of how skilled Indians are with a plan to conduct ‘Skills Stock Survey’
  • Parliamentary panel suggests better training for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deployed at the airports.
  • Government will implement USD 500 million World Bank-assisted multi-million skill development programme SANKALP under 6 year schedule.
  • Parliamentary panel to provide statutory powers to NCVT for better regulation of 14000 ITIs that offer technical education and skills.
  • Tourism & Hospitality Skill Council (THSC) will organize a ‘Mega Job Fair’ in Delhi on January 19 to bring together industry recruiters and job seekers.
  • As per a survey carried out by the AICTE-Confederation of Indian Industries across India over 21 percent institutions teaching engineering, management, architecture and pharmacy, do not offer any industry exposure to students.
  • Facebook stated that in accordance with the government’s Startup India campaign, it will create opportunities and invest in India’s startup ecosystem in 2018.
  • The government announced that it will start five “Schools of Excellence” in 2018, which will provide better quality education.
  • As per a study conducted across the country around 70-80 per cent of jobs in India can be potentially outsourced but companies are reluctant to hire freelancers for their work.
  • The government has told sector skill councils to ensure that their industry partners provide jobs to people who have been trained.
  • Due to the emergence of new generation technologies there is a demand for new set of skills from the auto workforce and as a result the hiring in the auto industry will slow down.
  • ITIs running operations from single rooms and not having a full-fledged infrastructure has come as a shock to the Government.
  • The construction of the first Indian Institute of Skills (IIS), on the lines on ITE Singapore which will provide hands-on training in advanced courses, will begin soon in Mumbai in collaboration with the Tata Group.

Jammu and Kashmir: 1. Three-day PMKVY Yoga Instructor Programme was conducted by Sri Sri Rural Development Trust (SSRDP) at NITS Polytechnic concludes 2. MSME Development Institute starts 6-week entrepreneurship skill development program in Srinagar.

Jharkhand: The state government is organizig a Skills Summit on January 12, the National Youth Day and proposes to hand over appointment letters to 25,000 skilled youths.

Karnataka: 1. Future Generali India Life Insurance partners with Manipal Global Education Services for a training program in BFSI. 2. Housejoy ties up with Beauty and Wellness Skill Council (B&WSSC) to provide online home services.

Madhya Pradesh: Prione Business Services, and Retailers Association’s Skill Council of India (RASCI), have partnered and conducted workshops to upskill small and medium sized businesses in Indore.

Odisha: 1. The government has asked all engineering colleges across the state to come up with an action plan to implement the mandatory period of internship for students by Jan 30th. 2. NALCO has dedicated three major projects to the nation on its foundation day on January 5. 3. Odisha Governor S C Jamir advised the industry to ensure a quality skill development system to meet their own needs as well as provide growth opportunities to the youth. 4. A skill development training programme was organized by the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development and the state government to impart training four trades – Logistic Management Associate, Supply Management Associate, Export Documentation and Procedure and Entrepreneurship and Export Management.

Punjab: 1. The deputy director stated that proper skill training, in varied courses, will open new avenues of employment for the youth, which is the need of hour. 2. Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM), in coordination with GM Industries (Jalandhar) organized an orientation programme to create awareness about skill development schemes run by PSDM.

Rajasthan: 1. Till date, 44,000 people with disabilities have been given training in Skill development and training will be provided to 5 lakh people with disabilities by 2018 and to 25 lakh by 2022 under Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan. 2. Hindustan Zinc Mining Academy commenced its 6th Batch of Jumbo Drill Operator Training Program at, Rajsamand where 120 select ITI/Diploma pass-outs will get trained in the 18 months residential program.

Telangana: India’s first national Park for differently-abled people inaugurated in Hyderabad focuses on vocational training for the differently-abled.
