Top highlights in skill education in India

  • The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme has tripled enrolments to 9,31,368 in FY 2023-24, offering over 5.5 lakh vacancies and 1,000 courses across 36 sectors to enhance youth skills and employment opportunities.
  • NTPC Mining Limited to train 80 youths from its coal mining projects in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh at CIPET in Machine Operator – Plastic Processing and Machine Operator – Injection Moulding courses.
  • A TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship report finds a severe skills shortage in India’s semiconductor industry, predicting a deficit of 250,000 to 300,000 professionals by 2027, with collaborative efforts planned to bridge the gap.
  • Shri Jayant Chaudhary was appointed as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State in the Ministry of Education.

Updates from the MSDE, NSDC, NCVET, UGC

  • An Indian tripartite delegation at the 112th International Labour Conference highlighted labor reforms and engaged in discussions on global skills, worker migration, and the future of work.
  • Shri Dharmendra Pradhan has been appointed as the Minister of Education in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
  • NCVET has recognized Samadhan Samiti, Centre for Industrial Staff Performance (CRISP), Delhi Metro Rail Academy(DMRA), Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA), NIESBUD and The Institution of Civil Engineers Society (ICES) as an Awarding Body to certify learners trained directly in its own campuses or fully managed training centers for approved qualifications.
  • The UGC announced that Indian universities will now permit admissions twice a year, in July-August and January-February, starting from this academic session.
  • Shri Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary of MSDE, took on the additional role of Chairperson of NCVET starting June 13, 2024.
  • MSDE aims to train 150,000 women, including a third in new-age skills, under PMKVY in the first 100 days of the new government.
  • Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, urged increased collaboration with industry partners to improve apprenticeship and vocational training programs in India.

Stakeholder collaboration – Industry, Academia and Government

  • THDC India Limited (THDCIL) and the Power Sector Skill Council (PSSC) have partnered through an MoU to use THDC’s HRD Centre for residential training programs.
  • The Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation will hold an entrance exam on July 14, 2024, to select candidates for six months of free coaching under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme for SSC, railway, and banking sector exams.
  • The Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (DSDE) to launch four three-month advanced courses in EVs, IoT, Advanced Additive Manufacturing, and Advanced Plumbing at five government-run ITIs in Goa, in collaboration with Tata Technologies Ltd.
  • CBSE Students from Class 6 to Class 12 now have the opportunity to take part in the National Automobile Olympiad 2024 launched by ASDC to encourage and foster automotive skills among students.
  • NABARD has launched a 30-day Skill Development Programme for 30 women in Kokernag, Anantnag, focusing on value-added processing of apples and vegetables into products like juice, jelly, jam, and pickles.
  • Skilling entrepreneurs is to be crucial for expanding e-commerce in India, as current digital penetration is only 6-7% on the buy side and 1-2% on the sell side.
  • The Chief Minister of Maharashtra has attended a skill development meet in Germany online to help resolve shortage of skilled manpower and provide youth employment opportunities.
  • Indian electronics and EV manufacturers are recruiting apprentices offering higher stipends to bridge the skill gap in technical roles crucial for EV development.
  • The Tamil Nadu government launched a textile skill development program through its Skill Development Corporation to equip youth with industry-relevant capabilities, facilitated by SITRA.
  • SRM University-AP initiated a “Destination Japan” program equips students with Japanese language proficiency and cultural understanding, facilitating direct hiring by Japanese companies to meet workforce demands.
  • Citerion to establish 1,511 Pramod Mahajan Rural Skill Development Centers across Maharashtra.

Skilling and Upskilling in Emerging Technologies

  • Sree Narayanaguru Open University (SGOU) is set to launch multiple programs, including BSc Data Science, MBA, and MCA, with an expected enrollment of 50,000 students.
  • The Department of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and NIELIT launched a Training of Trainers program at NIELIT Centre, Naharlagun, focusing on Data Science, Web Development, and IoT for ITI instructors.
  • UiPath announced initiatives to upskill 500,000 Indians in AI and automation by 2027, collaborating with FutureSkills Prime and other partners.
  • Oracle and TNSDC launched a skills development program under Naan Mudhalvan to train over 200,000 students in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, AI, data science and other emerging technologies.
