Career Cards from NCERT: Guiding Students from Classrooms to Careers

As India’s education system evolves under the transformative vision of the Nationl Education Policy (NEP) 2020, a pressing question is being asked across schools: Are our students truly prepared for the future world of work?

Academic scores alone no longer define success. What students really need is exposure to the wide range of career opportunities available to them, along with a clear understanding of how to get there.

In this context, NCERT’s Career Exploration Cards emerge as an invaluable resource—bridging the gap between education and employability, and helping students explore careers aligned with their skills, interests, and aspirations.

What are Career Cards and why are they important?

Designed by NCERT, these Career Exploration Cards are a comprehensive, student-friendly guidance toolkit that simplifies complex career information into easily digestible insights. Each card offers a complete snapshot of a profession, helping students, parents, educators, and counsellors make informed decisions about the future.

Whether a student dreams of becoming a financial analyst, marine biologist, content creator, air traffic controller, or medical technologist—Career Cards can be the first step toward discovering the path to get there.

They are not just descriptive—they are strategic tools that combine guidance with clarity.

What makes these cards stand out?

Each career card is structured to provide well-rounded, research-backed guidance. Here’s what students will find on every card:

  • Career overview: A clear explanation of the job role and what the profession entails
  • Who it’s best suited for: Traits, interests, and personality characteristics ideal for the role
  • Educational pathway: Courses to pursue, subjects to choose in school, and types of degrees required
  • Where to study: Examples of institutions that offer relevant programs
  • Salary expectations: Entry-level to experienced pay ranges across the sector
  • Career growth: Typical trajectory and long-term prospects in the field
  • Work environment: The kind of settings where this role typically operates
  • Real-life example: A success story or case study of someone who has made a mark in the profession

Together, these details make the Career Cards a 360-degree career planning resource—especially useful for students in middle and secondary school as they start thinking about their academic streams, vocational courses, and future aspirations.

Career Cards from NCERT Guiding Students from Classrooms to Careers

Volume 1: A gateway to creative, scientific, and service-oriented careers

Volume 1 of the Career Cards introduces students to foundational sectors that touch everyday life and the Indian economy. Some of the featured career domains include:

  • Agriculture and Allied Sciences
  • Arts, Media, Marketing, and Entertainment
  • Business and Finance
  • Health and Wellness

Each of these sectors includes multiple career paths. For example, in the “Arts and Media” segment, students may discover roles like animator, digital marketer, radio jockey, or graphic designer—each explained with relevant courses, institutions, and growth paths.

And this is just the beginning—there are many more options covered in the volume to inspire and guide students with diverse talents and dreams. Click here to read more.

Volume 2: Deep dive into STEM, Government, and vocational careers

Volume 2 expands the horizon, focusing on both traditional and emerging sectors, offering students a wide-angle lens into more technical and service-intensive domains. Career categories include:

  • Engineering
  • Government Services
  • Information Technology
  • Management
  • Operations, Logistics, and Hospitality
  • Public Policy, Law, and Safety
  • Research and Development
  • Technical and Skilled Trades

Whether it’s cybersecurity, hospitality management, civil services, or logistics—each profession is explained in terms of what to study, where to study, and how to succeed.

Again, this is not an exhaustive list. Both volumes feature many other exciting career options for students to explore in depth. Click here to read more.

How schools can use Career Cards effectively

For teachers and counsellors:
  • Use the cards during career guidance periods, life skills classes, or stream selection discussions
  • Organize interactive sessions where students pick a card, research the career, and present it to peers
  • Plan career mapping exercises where students connect current subjects to future pathways
  • Host career days or fairs where cards are used as conversation starters
  • Invite professionals from the listed careers to share their journeys, linking textbook to real life
For students:
  • Discover what careers match your personality, values, and skills
  • Set realistic, actionable short-term and long-term career goals
  • Explore where and what to study based on interest areas
  • Use success stories as inspiration to pursue unconventional or niche career paths
  • Take the first step in planning skill development and extracurricular choices

From awareness to action: A new chapter in career counselling

Career Cards are more than just informational—they are transformational tools. They encourage applied learning, stimulate interest in vocational pathways, and demystify complex career journeys for students at a crucial decision-making stage.

In a time when career confusion is common and job roles are rapidly evolving, these cards provide the clarity, structure, and aspiration young learners need to make confident, informed choices about their future.

They also ensure that no student is left behind—whether they dream of becoming a scientist or a chef, a public servant or a media artist.

India is building a skilled, future-ready generation—and it starts in our schools. By making Career Exploration Cards a part of the classroom, we’re helping students not only imagine their future, but take the first steps to achieve it.

Career counselling isn’t just about what job to choose—it’s about knowing yourself, building your skills, and crafting a path that’s right for you.
