It’s been a season of awards for skilling and vocational training! The ASSOCHAM skills-cum-awards summit was the highlight of the first half of August and we congratulate all the winners! Other important headlines that grabbed our attention include the promotion of apprenticeships and initiatives from the Ministry of Skill Development with regard to improving the ITIs and NSDC’s partnership with Google India to facilitate an ecosystem of Android development. News from the states

Andhra Pradesh: CII Southern Region in partnership with Efftronics, Vijayawada, launched the first edition of “In-Sync with Industry” a 3-week faculty enrichment program for teachers of engineering colleges to create awareness and appreciation for industry-relevant knowledge and skills in Electronics sector.

Assam: 1. Oil India Limited (OIL) has launched OIL CSR mission To promote awareness and practice of good corporate citizenship, by becoming an integral part of societal process. 2. Dabur had commenced its Corporate Social Responsibility activity in Tezpur by adopting a government-run primary and formally handed over the school to the local administration after undertaking a major revamp of the school facilities.

Delhi: The ASSOCHAM Summit-cum-Award on Skilling India held on 9th August 2017 at Hotel The Lalit, Delhi discussed various issues about catalyzing the skill development initiatives and recognized the efforts of various stakeholders through awards for their performance. Kerala: Union government has approved of the changes suggested by the state in the skill training programmes to be introduced in schools, latest by 2017-18 academic year.

Madhya Pradesh: A workshop on National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) was organised at Indore by Department for International Development (DFID), Government of UK in association with Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Association of Industries of Madhya Pradesh (AIMP) for promotion and adoption of apprenticeships.

Maharashtra: 1. Maharashtra has trained over 10 lakh people across 40 sectors since 2011, according to the data for various programmes managed by the National Skill Development Corporation and aims to skill 45 million workers by 2020. 2. Citibank will give training to 2,000 youths as a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), youth will be imparted with skill development department in the banking and financial sector. 3. SAP, will skill, reskill and upskill 15 lakh SAP consultants in the next three years as it looks to target small enterprises to grow its business in India.

Manipur: A handloom and handicraft centre in Imphal is providing training to destitute and underprivileged women folks in crafting and weaving to provide them with a means of livelihood.

Meghalaya: Twenty-six trainees from Meghalaya are undergoing skill development course for gardeners, which got underway at Central Institute of Horticulture

Nagaland: 1.Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) organised outreach program for the potential Project Implementing Agencies of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, the skill development and placement program of Ministry of Rural Development. 2. Governor, P B Acharya called upon educational institutions to emphasise on skill development education and not mere conventional academic education.

Punjab: 1. In order to provide free skill training and jobs to the needy people, the district administration is going to launch the ‘Samarth’ drive in the Ludhiana district. 2. Bharti Enterprises has offered to take up more schools in Punjab to further boost quality education, while seeking an opportunity to set up a food processing plant at Ludhiana.

Himachal Pradesh: 200 plus industrialists and businessmen took part at the World Food India roadshow which was organised to invite the state’s industrialists to participate in World Food India 2017.

Jammu & Kashmir: Mr. Majid Ahmed Bala, has received an award for his contribution in the field of design skill development, enhancing employability and entrepreneurship.

Karnataka: 1.ASSOCHAM conferred the best skilling award on National Centre for Excellence of RSETIs (NACER). NACER is an apex level organization for mentoring and monitoring RSETIs working under ministry of rural development. 2.LabourNet received the Best Vocational Training partner award from ASSOCHAM in silver Category.

Telangana: Telangana State inaugurated the State’s first IT-ITES RPL programme, which is a collaboration between National Skill Development Corporation, IT-ITES Sector-Skill Council-NASSCOM and Visri Technologies Solutions Pvt Ltd to pioneer a uniquely innovative initiative, Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL).

News from the industry

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), recently conducted an in-house ‘National Skill Championship 2017’ for all its dealership personnel across India, to bridge the growing skill gap in Indian industry.

Tata Power, through their skill development endeavour, Tata Power Skill Development Institute, aims to train over 54,000 people by 2020.

In order to support more youths self-sufficient, Adani Dhamra Port, as part of its skill development programme ‘Saksham’ has distributed sewing machines and certificate of excellence to eight rural girls.

Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training, a leading air hostess training institute received the Gold Award for “Best Higher Vocational Institute for Skill Development” 2017 at the ASSOCHAM INDIA Summit- Cum -Awards Ceremony.

News from the government

Skills Development Ministry is finalizing NSQF for adoption by 2019, which seeks to create employability benchmarks.  The Ministry has proposed to the HRD ministry to authorize the National Council for Vocational Training to carry out its own examination and award secondary and higher certificates to ITI trainees.

Multi skill development centres will be set up in three training centres, 14 frontiers across 46 sectors and 186 Battalions on the Indo-Pak and Indo-Bangladesh borders.

2.5 New Vision Generation received recognition NITI Aayog for its efforts to promote skill building in 14 Indian states through training unemployed youth in basic vision care.

Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is planning to set up a separate education board that would bring pass outs from Industrial Training Institutes at par with Class 10 and 12 certificates, hoping to bring skill and vocational training at parity with formal education.
