Since the beginning of May, the skill space in India has garnered continuous attention. With the release of Sharada Prasad Committee Report, we saw differing opinions in the media but the good thing was that many key stakeholders got an opportunity to share their opinion on the Report while it was made available in the public domain. Another important news is with regard to rethinking of skilling numbers by NSDC. The target of skilling 150 million by 2022 will be made more realistic in the coming days after discussions with the government. We also heard about the plans and ideas for policy reforms from the government to develop ITIs into proper formal schools like CBSE and ICSE schools. Let’s get updated with happenings in various states in India. Here’s updating you with the next edition of skill development news digest 160517.

Arunachal Pradesh: A six-week long Skill Development Training (SDT) Programme on tribal textile and handloom and tailoring was organized by Kadorna Welfare Centre (KWC) at Ganga Market, Itanagar, from April 25th to May 1st.

Delhi: 1. The Road Transport and the Skill Development ministries signed an agreement to set up 100 driver training institutes in order to meet the rising demand for certified commercial drivers in the automotive, construction and logistics sectors. 2. In order to  bridge the skill gaps in the fast growing rubber and tyre sector in India, Rubber Skill Development Council (RSDC), has signed an MoU with B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent University, Chennai for dual certification in Rubber Technology to Mechanical, Automobile and Polymer Engineering students. 3. The Automobile Society of India is planns to establish more student chapters and regional offices all over India to promote skill development programmes in the field of automobile and related sectors.

Goa: Vedanta announced a strategic roadmap to actively foster skill development in sports. The Organization through its Sesa Football Academy, has contributed immensely to development of football players in Goa. The academy has created the conditions for discovering, creating and building talent for football. The group now aims to build on the legacy of the academy and develop budding players in football from all over the country.

Gujarat: JBS Academy Pvt.Ltd. has received key certifications and affiliations to provide vocational education. It registered with AICTE as a  Vocational Training Provider with Directorate General of Training, Ministry of Skill Development and to equip youngsters with skills training to bridge the demand-supply gap in availability of quality manpower in logistics sector.  

Jammu and Kashmir: The J&K Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Samba organized a training course under Himayat Self Employment Component. The EDP is aimed to promote enterprise-led livelihoods by imparting training, sector exposure, financial linkages, market linkages, handholding and mentoring support to new entrepreneurs.

Kerala:  Transgenders selected for various jobs at Kochi Metro will be trained in communication and behavioural skills for inclusion into the mainstream. 23 transgenders were selected by Kudumbashree Mission for Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL).

Madhya Pradesh: Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) and Madhya Pradesh State Skill Development Mission signed a MoU to train 10000 youth every year. Two schemes were launched under this MP Skill Mission.

Maharashtra : A number of 170 plus doctors and pharmacists have been trained by the National Coordination Centre (NCC) of Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) under the Union health ministry as qualified pharmacovigilance personnel to further the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) under PMKVY.  This  is to encourage and initiate process of creating a registry of skills, enable and mobilize a large number of healthcare professionals to take up training and acquire requisite skills for employment apart.

Punjab: 1.  A team of senior officials of the Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM) visited Punjab Agricultural University to discuss the operation of skill development centre of agriculture, being established at PAU, for honing skills of youth in different enterprises. 2. ATDC launches on-the-job apparel training program in collaboration with NSDC. This includes Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) under PMKVY,

 Odisha: 1. Fasteners Association of India partnered with Eva Positive to set up a training centre  for promoting  excellence in growth and quality in automotive and general engineering manufacturing sectors. 2. Minister of State, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Govt of India Dharmendra Pradhan to inaugurated Conclave on Skill Development Initiatives in Hydrocarbon sector on 9th May 2017 in  Bhubaneswar. This conclave was  organised on the occasion of First Foundation Day of Skill Development Institute.

Rajasthan: Supreme Court judge, Madan B Lokur on Saturday highlighted the challenges in rehabilitation of children and said that skill training juvenile homes can be the answer for helping them out.

Smart City Projects: Hitachi Insight Group is thinking of investing in India’s ambitious Rs. 98,000-crore smart city mission. The government plans to have a 100 smart cities by 2022. Out of these, 60 cities have already been chosen and the rest in to be announced by June. This initiative will create a huge demand for skilled workforce in many industry sectors.
