India is expanding its presence at the global skills stage, with Team Skill India set to compete in 11 skill categories for the first time at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026.

India will participate in the 48th WorldSkills Competition, scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China, from 22 to 27 September 2026. With nearly 70 competitors competing across 63 of the 64 skill categories, India is set to make one of its largest and most diverse appearances at the international skills competition.

The addition of 11 new skills also points to a broader shift in India’s skilling ecosystem; from traditional trades towards emerging technologies, specialised occupations, digital skills, advanced manufacturing and customer-centric services.

India to Compete in 11 New Skills at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

Which 11 new skills will India compete in?

For the first time, India will participate in the following skill categories at WorldSkills:

  1. Dental Prosthetic: Focuses on the precision design and production of dental devices such as crowns, implants and dentures.
  2. Digital Interactive Media Design: Involves creating interactive and immersive digital experiences by combining design, content and technology.
  3. Intelligent Security Technology: Covers the installation and maintenance of intelligent security systems using technologies such as AI-enabled surveillance and smart sensors.
  4. Landscape Gardening: Combines design, construction and environmental knowledge to create functional and sustainable outdoor spaces.
  5. Optoelectronic Technology: Brings together light and electrical technologies, with applications across manufacturing, healthcare, communications and intelligent systems.
  6. Retail Sales: Focuses on customer engagement, product knowledge, merchandising and service excellence.
  7. Unmanned Aerial Systems: Covers drone technologies and their applications in areas such as agriculture, infrastructure, monitoring and public services.
  8. Industrial Mechanics: Involves precision assembly, maintenance, troubleshooting and optimisation of industrial machinery and production systems.
  9. Software Testing: Focuses on testing and validating software to improve its quality, reliability and performance.
  10. Heavy Vehicle Technology: Requires advanced skills in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of heavy vehicles and industrial mobility systems.
  11. Aircraft Maintenance: Involves inspection, servicing and troubleshooting of aircraft systems while meeting stringent safety and regulatory requirements.

A shift towards emerging skills

The new categories span very different occupations, but together they reflect several important areas of the evolving skills landscape.

Technology is creating new skill pathways

Skills such as Software Testing, Digital Interactive Media Design, Intelligent Security Technology, Optoelectronic Technology and Unmanned Aerial Systems highlight the growing demand for professionals who can work with emerging technologies.

From AI-enabled security systems to drone-based applications and interactive digital experiences, these occupations require a combination of technical knowledge, problem-solving and practical skills.

Specialised technical skills remain critical

The inclusion of Aircraft Maintenance, Heavy Vehicle Technology, Industrial Mechanics and Optoelectronic Technology demonstrates the continuing importance of highly specialised technical capabilities.

As industrial and mobility systems become more sophisticated, the workforce needs professionals who can not only operate equipment but also diagnose problems, maintain complex systems and work to international standards.

Skills are expanding beyond conventional technical trades

The addition of Retail Sales, Landscape Gardening and Dental Prosthetics shows that the skills ecosystem is also expanding into specialised services and occupations that combine technical knowledge with creativity, precision and customer understanding.

This broader approach recognises that employability skills are relevant across a much wider range of occupations and industries.

Industry partnerships support India’s WorldSkills preparation

India’s participation in these new categories is being supported through collaboration between training institutions, industry partners and domain experts.

Organisations supporting preparation across the new skill areas include Government Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC), Karnataka; Metrowoods Landscape; NAMTECH, Gandhinagar; Bennett University; Croma; Titan Company Ltd – Tanishq; Shoppers Stop; Reliance Trends; SANY Heavy Industry India Pvt. Ltd.; Prakhar Software Solutions Ltd.; and Denexpert Dental Lab, among others.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is leading India’s participation, while the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is driving preparations in collaboration with industry and training partners.

This industry-linked approach is particularly important for new and specialised skill categories, where access to the right equipment, technologies, workplace practices and expert mentoring can play a significant role in preparing competitors for international standards.

India’s growing performance on the global skills stage

India’s participation at WorldSkills comes against the backdrop of improving performance in international skills competitions.

India moved from 29th position at WorldSkills in 2015 to 13th in 2024. The country also secured 8th position in Asia at WorldSkills Asia 2025 and won five medals at the Taipei Capital Cup 2026.

More recently, Team India won five medals; three gold, one silver and one bronze, at the Global Skills Challenge Australia 2026, another important preparatory event ahead of WorldSkills Shanghai.

These results reflect the growing emphasis on structured training, expert mentoring, industry partnerships and international exposure as part of India’s skills development ecosystem.

The expansion into new WorldSkills categories is significant not simply because India is competing in more skills, but because the categories themselves reflect the changing nature of work.

Emerging areas such as drones, intelligent security systems, software testing and digital media are developing alongside specialised technical occupations such as aircraft maintenance and industrial mechanics. At the same time, service-oriented areas such as retail sales demonstrate the importance of customer-facing and employability skills.

For young people considering vocational education and skill-based careers, this expanding landscape presents new pathways to build specialised expertise and gain exposure to international standards.

As India prepares for WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, its participation across 63 skill categories signals an increasingly broad and evolving skills ecosystem; one that is looking beyond traditional occupations and preparing talent for new technologies, specialised industries and the future of work.
