This week’s NSN Newsbytes highlights key initiatives shaping India’s skills, education and employability landscape. From AI and cloud skilling initiatives targeting youth across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to apprenticeship-linked degree programmes and industry-aligned vocational training, organisations and governments are increasingly focusing on practical, future-ready skills. New collaborations are also opening opportunities in emerging sectors such as semiconductors, life sciences and advanced manufacturing, while international partnerships are creating pathways for Indian workers to access global employment opportunities. At the same time, investments in ITIs, polytechnics and community-based skilling are reinforcing the importance of vocational education.

Apprenticeships

  • Nuclear Fuel Complex invites applications for 432 ITI Trade Apprentice posts for 2026-27. Last date to apply is September 16, 2026. Click here to apply!
  • POWERGRID has announced 270 apprentice positions across multiple regions for ITI, diploma and graduate candidates. Online applications are open from August 25 to September 10, 2026. Click here to apply!

Highlights from this week’s Newsbytes 

  • India-Japan’s planned 50,000-worker employment corridor faces a Japanese-language skills gap, potentially slowing opportunities for Indian workers seeking jobs in Japan.
  • World Skill Center Bhubaneswar signs 25 MoUs with technical institutes and universities to strengthen advanced skilling, academic collaboration, research and youth employability.
  • NSDC, Cultus Education and AWS launch a nationwide cloud and AI skilling initiative, targeting 1.5 lakh learners with training focused on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

National skill development updates

  • NITI Aayog reports 8.7 crore Indians aged 15-29 are out of education, employment or training, calling for stronger vocational education and apprenticeships. 
  • NIOS has opened online registration for the October-November 2026 Vocational Education examinations, covering unsuccessful and marks-improvement candidates from the April-May 2026 exams.
  • Australia plans to expand its education and skilling presence in India through new university campuses and specialised vocational training programmes.
  • The Centre is considering engaging eligible senior citizens as ITI mentors, while also exploring student volunteers, updated curricula and degree pathways for ITI diploma holders.
  • POWERGRID’s Skill Development Centre in Malda trains 54 candidates in its seventh batch, taking total trainees to 330 and supporting placements across key industries. 
  • NSDC and Takamol sign an MoU to strengthen skill verification, training and international employment pathways for Indian workers, particularly in Saudi Arabia.

State-led Skill Initiatives 

  • Karnataka will invest ₹2,500 crore to transform 500 government schools by 2029-30, introducing AI education, skill-based learning and upgraded infrastructure. 
  • NSEDM, IDAN and Saint-Gobain India sign an MoU to provide industry-aligned training, placement support and entrepreneurship opportunities for youth in Nagaland.
  • Telangana government forms a high-level panel to review polytechnic restructuring, addressing stakeholder concerns and recommending measures to modernise technical education within 30 days.
  • M3M Foundation launches VyaPower’s digital entrepreneurship platform, expanding practical business training for rural women, youth and grassroots communities across India. 
  • Uttar Pradesh and Japan plan deeper cooperation in semiconductors, skill development and tourism, including Japanese-standard training centres to prepare youth for industry jobs.

Industry Partnerships for Employability 

  • LSSSDC hosted SkillVerse 2026 in Hyderabad, bringing 100+ life sciences leaders together to address emerging skill gaps and build an industry-ready workforce. 
  • PwC India and SAP India launch an 18-month skilling programme for engineering students, combining SAP certifications, industry experience, internships and employment opportunities.

CSR initiatives in skills and livelihoods

  • DBS Bank India commits ₹10 crore to MITTI Café to expand employment and vocational training opportunities for persons with disabilities across India.

Higher Education and Emerging Skills  

  • University of Mumbai launches an apprenticeship-embedded BE programme, allowing eligible final-year students to gain year-long industry experience alongside academic credits.
