Their spending habits reflect a commitment to sustainable and innovative products and services. According to a McKinsey article, here are the five main areas of Gen Z purchases:

  1. Appearance: Investing in cosmetics, hair care, and skin care.
  2. Health: Using OTC medicines, home care products, and vitamins.
  3. Fitness: Spending on wearables, studio classes, and club memberships.
  4. Nutrition and Sleep: Utilizing food services, tracking apps, sleep wear, and melatonin.
  5. Mindfulness: Investing in meditation classes, apps, and therapy.

Leveraging yoga heritage for skilling and entrepreneurship in India

India, the birthplace of yoga, has a rich heritage that can be effectively leveraged to create employment and promote entrepreneurship. Here are the top five ways India can harness its yoga legacy to drive economic growth and foster new business and job opportunities:

  1. Yoga and Wellness Tourism
  • Yoga Retreats and Centers: Establish world-class yoga retreats in locations like Rishikesh, Mysore, and Varanasi to attract international tourists.
  • Yoga Festivals and Heritage Trails: Organize large-scale yoga festivals and create wellness heritage trails to boost local economies and promote local crafts and cuisine.

Emerging job roles, training, skills and education in Yoga 

With tremendous potential for creating jobs, Yoga industry creates a huge demand for Yoga professionals who can train, mentor, counsel, guide and take up many other roles in the larger spectrum of the Health and Wellness industry in India. At the same time, since the Yoga industry is mostly informal and unorganized, it also presents a huge opportunity to formalize and consolidate various efforts under the larger umbrella Physical and Mental Health, Sports, Beauty and Wellness.

However, the training and skill development ecosystem for Yoga is yet to take off! At present, three Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) represent the industry perspective and contribute to various aspects of training, self-employment and placement.

The training curriculum, including Qualification Packs (QP) and National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Yoga, is developed by the Healthcare SSC, Sports and Fitness SSC, and Beauty and Wellness SSC. These standards ensure a structured and high-quality approach to yoga education and training.
