This fortnight saw some major developments in skill space as the government of Singapore signs an MoU with NSDC to contribute to skill development and training in India and Schneider Electric will open training centers in 500 districts. And, to mention the highlights from the states: Madhya Pradesh will set up a skill development center in Tourism, Jharkhand inaugurates 12 news ITIs, Manipur conducts a weaver’s training programs…well, the list is long. So, read on to know more. Here’s updating you with the next edition of skill development news digest 151016.

  • Arunachal Pradesh: The government entered into an MoU with NIELIT for skill development through public and private sectors for students or unemployed youth in the ESDM sector.
  • Assam: Government has allotted a budget of 3,700 crores for private companies and organisations to use CSR as an effective tool for the development of North Eastern states.
  • Bihar: NSDC and Rise India join hands to impart driving skills in Chhabra. The organisation aims to start 50 centres to generate employment in the field.
  • Chandigarh: A Sports meet was organised for vocational education students with an objective to recognize the positive value of sports as an instrument for uniting people, building communities, promoting peace and development.
  • Delhi: 1: eAgeTutor, an online spoken English training service in India, aims towards skill-development and youth employment for more than 300,000 participants who have enrolled. 2. Bhondsi Jail celebrates the successful implementation of vocational training to nearly 2360 men and women jail inmates.
  • Jharkhand: 12 ITIs were inaugurated in Dumka to generate job opportunities for the youth of the state by imparting industrial training.
  • Kerala: The Centre has given approval for a scheme, under the PMKVY for the skill development in small rubber holders. The rubber board aims to train and employ unskilled labourers in tapping and processing.
  • Madhya Pradesh: To realize the potential of jobs in the Tourism sector, the government will set up a national level institute for skill development and training in tourism.
  • Manipur: With a budget of 50crores from the government a “Weaver’s Training Program” has been started particularly to the women folk to provide them a livelihood for running their family and to reduce unemployment.
  • Maharashtra: 1. Phonics and Reading workshop initiated where more than 100 teachers from over 25 International schools came together for this training program. 2. Nashik: Nearly 500 people from the weaker sections of the society to get skill training. The NMC aims to tie up with private companies for funding and equipment. 3. KTI and Carrier Media India partner to provide vocational training in Air conditioning and refrigerators. 4. India’s first global skill development centre to be set up in Mumbai, to train youth for jobs in India as well as overseas to increase the demand for skilled workforce from India.
  • Nagaland: A five-day women skilled development workshop was inaugurated in in order to preserve culture and traditions.
  • Punjab: Teacher training workshop was held at Great Indian Presidency School where the teachers were taught effective classroom management, good lesson plan, learning skills, literary skills, life skills etc.
  • Pondicherry: The government aims to train 5000 students in soft skills and and generate jobs especially in Tier 2 and 3 towns.
  • Tamil Nadu: Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) entered into an MoU with Annamalai University to start a diploma and skill development in the Mining sector.
  • Rajasthan: Tourism skill training centre was started in Udaipur where training is provided in cruise liners and airlines. Training also includes waste management projects and digital networking in remote areas.
  • Uttarakhand: 1. In order to address the challenges of unemployment and ensuring gainful employment for youth the government plans to target 6.5 lac youth and provide employment opportunities while promoting self-entrepreneurship. 2. Centum Learning partnered with UKSDM for skill development with nearly 1400 learning and development specialists.

News from the industry sectors

  • Power Sector: French company Schneider Electric will open training centres in 500 districts across the country and help set up a Centre of Excellence focused on power, solar and automation sectors
  • Gem and Jewellery: The sector aims to provide training and skill development to 500 million youth of our country by 2020 to adapt with the latest technology in the industry, also by skilling and certifying youth.
  • Agriculture: After successfully training over 80,000 youth and getting them placed in various sectors in the skill industry, the alumni (PARFI) network of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is about to open more skill training centres across the country. The infrastructure support is provided by the government and teachers and training is provided by the institute.

News from the center

  • Skill development, agreements signed between ITE Education Services, Singapore and NSDC with the objective of developing advanced skills training for Indian youth.
  • Deakin University, Australia singed an MoU with FICCI towards enhancing skills of stakeholders while building management, governance and in the sports skill sector.
  • Apex industry body ASSOCHAM  has urged the government to fill prevailing gaps in infrastructure availability, awareness and efficiency of value chain that have halted the growth of food processing sector in India.
