Apprenticeships could be of great value to build capacity in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sector. The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) has incentives for the industry to engage apprentices in small and medium enterprises. Are the MSMEs aware of the advantages of engaging apprentices? How do we involve more industry sectors to adopt NAPS, since there is a provision to include optional trades. In 2019, we featured interviews and articles that are aimed at creating awareness about apprenticeships in the MSME sector.

With the recent amendments in the Apprenticeship Act, MSMEs have great scope in attracting and retaining talent by engaging them as apprentices. As per the All-India Census statistics, there are 13 million MSMEs in the country and the total employment in this sector is 41.0 million. Going by these numbers, even if each enterprise employs at least one apprentice, total number of apprentices will increase tremendously. Read more…

As you know, ever since the introduction of NAPS (National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme), SMEs from all sectors are exploring the opportunity to build capacity by attracting young talent. Unlike past, employers have the freedom to design on-the-job training curricula based on specific requirements through “Optional Trades”. This has motivated more SMEs to provide training to candidates who aspire to undergo skill-based training.
