“Embedded systems and IoT (Internet of Things) form the backbone of many present and future technologies, making them essential for students aiming to advance in technology-driven sectors” says Mr. Ayyappan Ramachandran Nair, Principal at NTTF Tellicherry Centre.

To learn more about Post Diploma in Embedded Systems and IoT, courses offered at Tellicherry Centre, the diverse job roles and career opportunities in emerging tech fields, the eligibility criteria, and what students can expect from the program, and more, we spoke with Mr. Ayyappan Ramachandran Nair, Principal at Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF) – Tellicherry Centre.

Here are some of the highlights from the interview. To watch the full video, please visit our YouTube channel.

Q. Could you share your journey at the Tellicherry Center and its history at NTTF?

A. I have been with NTTF since 2006 and currently serve as the principal of the Tellicherry Center, which is significant in NTTF’s history as the site where it began its journey in 1959. Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving as principal at various centers, including Dharwad, Coimbatore, Cochin, and Tellicherry. I initially joined the Tellicherry Center in 2013 and worked there until 2017.

NTTF started modestly in Tellicherry with just six people, and today it has grown to over 15 training centers across India. We offer courses at four levels: Diploma, Post-Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, and Certificate-level programs. At the Tellicherry Center, we specifically offer Diplomas in Tool Engineering and Digital Manufacturing, Mechatronics Engineering and Smart Factory, and Computer Engineering, along with Post-Diploma programs and one-year certificate courses.

Q. Could you tell us more about the Post Diploma in Embedded Systems and IoT, and its relevance in today’s emerging technology landscape?

A. NTTF offers industry-relevant courses that are designed to meet both current and future industry needs. Specifically, when we talk about the Post Diploma in Embedded Systems and IoT, it’s one of the most sought-after courses today. Here’s why:

Core to Emerging Technologies: Embedded Systems and IoT are critical in areas such as cybersecurity, machine monitoring, artificial intelligence, and more.

Hardware-Software Integration: While software is crucial, it always requires hardware to operate. That’s where embedded controllers come into play. For instance, modern automotive electronics like BS6-compliant vehicles require over 100 embedded controllers integrated into a single vehicle.

IoT as a Game-Changer: Embedded systems are essential for IoT implementation. IoT has revolutionized industries by enabling:

  • Remote control and monitoring (e.g., managing factories from remote locations)
  • Telemetry and tele-monitoring
  • Remote surgery and data collection
  • Smart automation in industries and homes

This course is crucial for anyone looking to advance in technology-driven sectors, especially as IoT continues to make our lives more efficient and connected.

Q. What are the entry criteria and qualifications required for students to enroll in this program?

A. The entry criteria for the Post Diploma in Embedded Systems and IoT, it is open to students who have completed a diploma in Electronics, Computer Science, B.Tech graduates or related streams like Applied Electronics. The key requirement is that candidates should have a fundamental understanding of electrical, electronics, and computer systems.

Q. What key skills can students expect to acquire through the Post Diploma Program in Embedded Systems and IoT?

A. Our Post Diploma program is designed for diploma holders in electronics, communication, electrical, or automotive electronics. In the first semester, we focus on revising fundamentals like semiconductor technology, microcontrollers (including 8051, PIC, and ARM), with hands-on practicals. In the second semester, students undertake a project, which can be done either in-house or within an industry setting. Through industry exposure, they gain experience in design, schematics, and modular product development, ensuring their work aligns with the latest technologies and practices.

Q. How does the program facilitate industry exposure for students, and is it through internships or independent project work?

A. We facilitate internships with embedded system companies that require assistance on ongoing projects. During these internships, students can engage in industrial projects, though they cannot collect specific project details due to ethical guidelines. Alternatively, students can work on independent projects within our premises, with supervision and support from our senior faculty members.

Q. What job roles and industries can students expect to pursue upon completing this diploma program?

A. The embedded and IoT industries are thriving, with major players like Bosch, Continental, Denso, Infineon, and Tata Lexi leading the way. One of my alumni, who completed the post-diploma in Embedded Systems five years ago, is now a leading engineer at Continental in Electronic City.

Regarding job roles, opportunities in embedded systems and IoT are diverse, particularly in the growing field of wearable devices. For instance, a wearable device recently saved a man’s life by alerting the nearest hospital when he collapsed. Embedded systems engineers are crucial in developing both the hardware and software for such devices.

Key career opportunities include:

  • Wearable technology: Designing and developing health-monitoring devices that can track vital signs and alert medical professionals.
  • Automotive solutions: Working on embedded systems for vehicles, such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and infotainment systems.
  • Machine monitoring: Creating systems for real-time monitoring of machinery to enhance efficiency and prevent failures.
  • Industrial automation: Developing solutions for automating processes in manufacturing and other industries.

Overall, wherever there is automation, there is a significant demand for embedded and IoT solution providers.

Q. What advice would you give to students looking to pursue a career in emerging technologies like embedded systems and IoT?

A. I recommend that today’s youth focus on emerging technologies. Embedded systems and IoT courses offer promising futures for the next 20 years. Students should cultivate a strong interest in programming, maintain an open mind, and develop analytical skills. Those who are observant and committed to learning will find great opportunities in this field and this is where NTTF plays an important role in supporting the students in their journey.

  • National Skills Network-NSN celebrates 11 years!!We are grateful for your continued support and engagement over the years. It has been central to this journey. This milestone reflects both our journey and the ecosystem we’ve engaged with.Over the last decade, we’ve observed and gained a clear perspective on how education, skills, and careers are evolving across the ecosystem. And one insight continues to stand out.The gap is no longer about skills awareness. The gap is in the transition from education to employability. To strengthen a complex, fragmented, but evolving ecosystem, a shift is needed. Many pathways are still shaped by compromise, confusion, or circumstance, making the system largely reactive. From reactive responses
- to proactive pathwaysWhere:
💠Skills are integrated into education early
💠Learning is connected to real-world application
💠Employability is built into the systemAs NSN marks 11 years, we remain focused on contributing to this shift through deeper engagement, conversations, and collaborations across the ecosystem. If this resonates with your work, let us know how you would like to engage with NSN.
