Webinar on Work-Based Learning in India: How to Make it a Success

Team NSN organized a webinar on “ Work-Based Learning in India: How to Make it a Success” on 19th July 2024. The webinar explored crucial insights into implementing effective work-based learning in India, including internships, apprenticeships, and other practical training methods. Aligning with the objectives of NEP 2020 and focusing on fostering skill development and enhancing career readiness.

Updates from the MSDE, NSDC, NCVET, UGC

  •  The NSDC urged the Finance Ministry to extend tax benefits for education-related services to skill development training, recommending changes to the Income Tax Act and GST.
  • Mondelez India, in collaboration with NSDC, launched a youth skilling programme at centres in Bhind and Pune on World Youth Skills Day, aiming to empower 660 young people.
  • The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has partnered with NSDC to offer skill-based training to students aspiring for career opportunities in global healthcare jobs.
  • India and Japan, through strategic discussions with the Osaka Prefectural Government, aim to enhance skills and innovation, broadening learning and employment opportunities globally.

Sustainable Industry-Academia Partnerships for Skill Education in India – Episode 3

In this mini-series from NSN, leaders from prominent Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) were invited to discuss the pivotal role of sustainable industry-academia partnerships in shaping India’s skill education landscape. This discussion aims to strengthen awareness about the opportunities presented by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and is geared towards initiating innovative collaborations between academia and the industry.

The conversation, moderated by Dr. Madhuri Dubey, Founder and Director, NSN, featured insights from Dr. Abhilasha Gaur, CEO of the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI); Mr. Arindam Lahiri, CEO of the Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC); and Mr. Ravikanth Yamarthy, CEO of the Logistics Sector Skill Council (LSSC).

In the third and last episode, the discussion focused on ensuring the effective implementation of industry-academia collaboration, a concept still emerging in many educational institutions. Key action points to make this engagement sustainable include: first, developing structured partnerships that integrate real-world industry projects into academic curricula, and second, establishing regular feedback loops between industry and educational institutions to align training with current industry needs.

Stakeholder collaboration – Industry, Academia and Government

  •  The Maharashtra government allocated ₹76 crore to train 10,000 youths for jobs in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, and ₹36 crore to establish 200 classrooms in Maharashtra for German language learning.
  • The Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) hosted the ASDC Partners’ Forum, focusing on “Collaborate, Empower, Accelerate, Achieve” to unite and empower the automotive sector for future success.
  • THSC partners with key stakeholders to empower the youth of Tripura through skill development and enhance entrepreneurial skills in emerging sectors tailored to specific needs.
  • IHCL Goa has signed a memorandum of understanding with 11 of Goa’s Industrial Training Institutes to provide students and youth with training at its various properties across the state.
  • Tata Chemicals Society of Rural Development, in partnership with Light of Life Trust, opened a Livelihood and Skill Training Center in Mulshi, Pune, to benefit 430 individuals from 10 villages by providing training and employment or entrepreneurial support.
  • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in collaboration with Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne and Hyatt Hotels, launched an 18-month Swiss Professional Diploma programme in Delhi NCR and Lucknow, offering vocational training and job placements for Class 12 graduates.
  • HDFC Bank has provided skill training to about 3.25 lakh youth in high-demand sectors over the past 10 years under its CSR initiative, Parivartan.
  • Tata Motors established automotive skill labs at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, aiming to train over 4,000 students annually, including 30% girls, as part of the National Education Policy 2020.
  • Vedanta Aluminium, in partnership with OSDA and NABARD, aims to skill 3,500 youth in Odisha over the next three years near its Lanjigarh alumina refinery.
  • The Karnataka government launched the Karnataka Inclusive Livelihood Programme (KILP) with a budget of ₹23 crore to create sustainable, gender-equitable, and climate-resilient livelihoods for 4,000 households across 20 taluks in 10 districts.
  • Ten world-renowned universities, including the University of Texas and London Business School, will establish Skill Development Centres in Telangana for ₹300 crore, announced Minister Shri Sridhar Babu Duddilla.
  • IIM Raipur has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited for a rigorous Leadership Development Program for early career officers to foster skill development of professionals.
  • Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University has given affiliation to two new private engineering institutes and six institutes of BVoc in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Maharashtra government will establish Acharya Chanakya Skill Development Centres in 1,000 colleges across the state to implement NEP 2020 and provide opportunities to the youth.
  • The government of Maharashtra announced the ‘Ladka Bhau’ Yojana, a job training and stipend scheme for youth, following the recent financial assistance program for women.
  • KCCI and GJEPC held a meeting at Hotel Grand Lalit to discuss cooperation in the gem and jewellery sector, focusing on skill development and participation in GJEPC events.

Skilling and Upskilling in Emerging Technologies

  • ITI Shikohabad in Firozabad launched new courses on IoT and electric vehicles, with applications open online until August 4 for high school graduates.
