Transferable Skills can Help Students Achieve Career Success

“Personal transformation can and does have global effects. As we go, so goes the world, for the world is us. The revolution that will save the world is ultimately a personal one.” – Marianne Williamson

 What are Transferable Skills?

Transferable skills are skills that an individual can use from one job to the next. These skills include communication, adaptability, punctuality, patience, organisation, and teamwork.

A rising number of employers are seeking candidates with strong transferable skills to be a part of their professional team. Candidates with transferable skills come across as agile and independent. So, equipping your students with certain skills and abilities which are applicable outside of the curriculum will position them for greater career success.

The transferable skills that employers seek include:

  • Adaptability and teamwork
  • Organisation and planning
  • Listening and communication (delivering presentations)
  • Attention to details
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Prioritisation and multitasking
  • Creativity
  • Leadership and delegation

Transferable SkillsWhy Are Transferable Skills Important?

Transferable skills are incredibly valuable to employers to consider a candidate for any position. These softer skills, which are indirectly related to a position, help a candidate to demonstrate how much they have learned. It highlights their competence and potential as they lack actual work experience on the field.

Three teaching approaches used to develop skills

  • Embedding: this is mostly teaching while doing a task, for example, teaching technical skills.
  • Integrating: this approach is more like scenario-based teaching. For example, imagine a scenario of some students acting like they are working in an auto showroom:
    • Talking to customers will hone communication skills
    • Managing difficult customers will hone negotiation skills
    • Motivating a team will hone teamwork skills
    • Managing a busy schedule will hone prioritising skills
  • Bolting-on: this approach is when skills are taught outside of the regular curriculum.

It might seem difficult to operationalise these teaching practices, and identify ways to help your students review their skills. In case you are unsure which transferable skills to highlight for a particular role. Take advantage of online tools like SkillPass powered by Certif-ID to guide your students on their career paths.
