Skill Development News Digest – 010617

Some top of the mind questions, as May – June are the months of results of various school and college exams, entrance tests and interviews. How many school and college students are aware of vocational subjects and technical courses? Are we really progressing towards building bridges between mainstream and vocational education? Let’s hope the toppers, the middle and the low achievers – all of them do well this academic year and get exposed to required skills to balance their schooling, taking inspiration from how Dual System of Vocational Training works in countries like Germany. News from the states

Andhra Pradesh: 1.Minister for Skill Development, AP, announced that a Skill Development Centre would be established at Machilipatnam for conducting skill development training to unemployed youth. 2. Special skill training programme will be conducted at VR Siddhartha Engineering College, Kanuru and VVIT Engineering College, Namburu, for unemployed engineering and diploma graduates organised by the Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC).

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Administration will work upon improving skill development within the UT. After a sanction of Rs 80 lakhs, the focus will be on youth-centric vocational education, especially for girls.

Goa: National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) based in Panaji, Goa has invited application from shrimp farmers, brackish aquaculture farmers, and microbiology lab assistants who will be trained in skill development.

Jharkhand: AISECT has partnered with the Jharkhand Skill Development Mission (JSDM) for their project ‘Saksham Jharkhand Kaushal Vikas Yojana’ to provide quality skills training.

Karnataka: The Asian Research and Training Institute for Skill Transfer (ARTIST) has invited collaborators from across industries for a healthier India through Skill Transfer and applying optimal use of Technology to make quality healthcare accessible wherever it currently is not.

Maharashtra: 1. Skill Development Department launches Mahamaitri, an email address (id mahamaitri.sded@maha.gov.in) for corporates who have signed memorandum of understandings with the department. 2. Government of Maharashtra launches Mahaswayam, a Portal for job seekers and employers entrepreneurs, and training institutes 3. The Vendata group along with the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development plans to modernize at least 4000 “Anganwadis” which will focus on children’s health and education and skilling women.

Nagaland: The Don Bosco Tech at the Aida Centre launches the 21st batch for its skill development programme at Dimapur. Khekiye Sema, retired IAS officer, was the chief guest for the day.

Punjab: 1. Government of Punjab signed an MoU with Reliance Jio for providing free Wi-Fi facility on campuses of all government ITIs, polytechnics and engineering colleges. Reliance Jio will bear the cost of equipment and electricity. 2. All weather hydrotherapy facility and a vocational training centre were inaugurated at Chetak Asha School at the Military Station, Bathinda.

Rajasthan: 1. Hindustan Zinc Mining Academy, in collaboration with Skill Council for Mining Sector and Indian Institute of Skill Development Pvt. Ltd will 500 ITI pass outs in Mining Operations such as Jumbo Drill Operations and Winding Engine operations. 2. The Department of Skills, Employment and Entrepreneurship (DSEE) Jaipur has proposed to the State Madarsa Board to provide skill training programmes to pass or drop out students of madrassa.

Tripura: 1. The Tripura Bamboo Mission started a programme at Khashchowmhuni village under Sepahijala district, where several rural women, under self-help group, took training in bamboo handicraft making. 2. In Tripura, rural women are becoming entrepreneurs thanks to their skills in bamboo products. Bamboo, referred to as poor man’s timber is integral to the culture of Tripura.

News from the industry sector

Apparel industry: 1. Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) has launched a new programme where they train workers “on the job” to identify the industry skill gaps and to enhance the skill. This programme is being introduced under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 2.0 in the states of Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. 2. ATDC  will open a new centre and a regional training hub at Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar to fulfil the need of rapidly growing textile sector in Gujarat.

Automotive industry: 1. Maruti Suzuki India will set up Automobile Skill Enhancement Centres (ASEC) in the next three months. The company will set up these centres at the 15 Government run Industrial Training Institute (ITI) across 11 states in the country. 2. Tata Motors will train 40,000 in 3 years in automotive skills. The focus is on 10th and 12th Class dropouts from rural areas, besides women, to make them industry ready.

Shipping industry: Ministry of Shipping signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Rural Development for skill development of youth in coastal areas flag shipped under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY).

Beauty industry:  Talwakars and Beauty and wellness Sector Skill Council (BWSSC) have signed an MoU with the candidates all across the centres and academies to develop and impart skill through courses, access to information on database, standardisation, accreditation and certification.

Telecom industry: Microsoft India and the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC) signed a MoU on “Project Sangam” where Microsoft Azure services as well as LinkedIn will provide integrated mobile-first platform for skilling and employment.

News from the Central Government

Mr. Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) met with Ann Linde, Sweden’s Minister of EU Affairs and Trade and Foreign Affairs Minister. It was decided that the two sides will identify some concrete activities and deliberate on constituting a Joint Working Group through an MoU.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has begun grading the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country by giving star ratings. This will help students to opt from the best institutes, and employers by providing them the formal governmental recognition.

The Directorate General of Training  (DGT) and MSDE have launched five high-end diploma courses (Welding Technology, Industrial Electronics and Automation, Manufacturing Technology, Automotive Technology and IT, Networking and Cloud Computing) for the academic year, 2017.
